Analyzing Dr watson Log

Hi,

I am working in a VC++ project. While running one of our services, one server is generating Dr.Watson error. I have Dr Watson log and user dump at that time. How to analyze these logs to find out the reason for the crash of my server.

You can use CrashFinder utility for this:

Bug report from client computer should contain address of program instruction where exception occured. For computer without Visual C exception is logged to Dr. Watson log:
<system disk>:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\
Dr Watson\drwtsn32.log

Exception report has the following format:

Application exception occurred:
...
*----> Task List <----*
...
State Dump for Thread Id 0x...
...
function: ...
...
FAULT ->nnnnnnnn

where nnnnnnnn is exception address.

Having exception address from Dr. Watson log we can find source code line where exception occured (see details in the book "Debugging Applications" by John Robbins). To do this:
   - run CrashFinder program (one of the book samples)
   - create new CrashFinder project, add to it executable and all Dll from of your program. All these files are selected by green sign if CrashFinder finds Debug Info and mapfiles for these exe and Dll's.
- run function Find Crash from Edit menu, type crash address from bug report and see result. If source line not found, exception occured in some other code (MFC, third-party Dll etc.)
Actual source line where exception occured may be exactly the line poined by CrashFinder or line close to it because of compiler optimizations.

Executable and all Dll should contain mapfiles and debug information.

Hi,

Thanks for your info. Currently i am using Windbg tool to debug the user dump file, that i got along with the watson log. But i dont know exactly how to use this tool. I tried to anlyse the dump but i was getting some error regarding the symbols. i installed win 2k sp3 symbols, which is the client OS, still i am getting the same problem. wht can be reason.
any help?

I am trying to download symbols for some of the hotfixes on windows 2000. But I couldnt able to
get the exact URL for this.
any help in this regard?
