My XP Backup hangs with the message "Looking for backup devices". The process ntbackup.exe has no activity

Without success, I tried:
1) Replacing the backup program ntbackup.exe file in Windows\System32 with a fresh install
2) Deinstalling all drives except for C:
3) Checked hard drive for surface errors
4) Did a Start->Run->SFC /Scannow
5) Searched the Microsoft knowledge data base
6) No other strange computer behaviour detected
7) Problem is not related to SP2

The program worked fine before on same computer.

Thanks
