Char 9 inside a chart and other questions

Hi All,
First, this is not a Database related Question, it is related to the GUI things in CR, but i couldn't find any better place to put this question.
also, I am using CR 8.0.1.0

I have the following case:
Have a one page report (we report) that contains a line chart, onChangeof a date field it plot some amounts, The dates are passed as YYYYMM to the report to keep the sorting correct, a recent request by the client was to put the format as YYYY-MMM or YYYY/MMM

I did the format, but the problem now is that the sorting of the data is alphapitaclly, and so it is wrong in real order, Meaning that 2003 APR comes before 2003 JAN,
Actually, the order is APR, AUG, DEC, FEB, JAN, JUL, JUN, MAR, MAY, NOV, OCT, SEP

I cannot use the "Specified order" because i am attching to the year (which happens to be dynamic - differs as the data differs) , so I added a specified number of Chars to the month name, to change its presedence in order, I tried some chars, and on CHR(9) it worked, I added 11 chars of CHR(9) to JAN, 10 to FEB, 9 to MAR, 8 to APR and son on and it worked perfectly, now they are ordered, and the Chart image is generated and retruned as rose.

Anyhow, when i moved to Production, the nightmare began, instead of invisible charachters, small squares started to appear in front of months, I am now sure it is a machine dependent thing, since it worked at the dev machine, but i don't know what is the factor in that.

If CHR(9) happens not to be an invisible character, then i need one that is < "A" and < "a"

Another thing, since this is a 1 page report, i wanted to remove the toolbar from teh report , and the page navigator, can anyone help me in taht too?

thanks pals.

BTW: why Ex-Ex doesn't have the ability to attach pictures, that would have helped me alot in putting the question :)

Are the dates still passed as YYYYMM?  If so you could sort on that and use the format feature to format the dates as desired.  You might have to build a formula to do the formatting

The difference may be in the fonts on the machines or in a setting.

Which toolbar?  If you mean the Crystal, how are you displaying the report?  Most of the CR viewers have properties that can be turned off to hide the vvarious icons.

mlmcc, thanks for the fast reply,

well, the dates are still passed as YYYYMM, but if i pass a formula to the "onchangeof" of the chart, the chart will still sort by the result of teh formula. it is CR 8 we are talking about, i think (not sure) that this issue is solved in newer version of CR.

The toolbar that contains the Page Navigation, the refresh and the find (search) buttons, I am using the rptServer.asp page to display the reports. teh (oPageEngine).
and i couldn't remove it.

Space (chr(32)) is < 'A' and < 'a' so it sorts correctly but the bad thing is that it may alter your formatting a little.

not alittle, a lot, imagine adding 11 spaces in fron of JAN , and after the year

thats 2003                           JAN
then after a while
       2003 DEC

That's a fair point - the problem is that any "invisible" character is likely to cause you some problems.  You can try chr(10) (line break), chr(0) (null), or chr(23) (end block) but most likely in some cases each of these will display as a square (non-displayable character).

I assume that converting these to actual dates is out of the question - most likely you wouldn't have posted otherwise but I figured I'd ask...

Something I did once to get around this problem was to suppress the axis labels so the chart was created without any labels on the horizontal axis.  Then I created a formula to convert yyyymm (numeric) into a displayable format and I positioned this formula on the lower left side of the graph to indicate the "minimum" side of the scale.  Repeated for the maximum side.  This gave the range of values on the vertical axis accurately, but doesn't display anything in between.  Fine if you've got six data points but worthless if you've got dozens.

Otherwise I don't see a solution for you w/out going to a third party charting plugin.  Crystal is only going to chart the fields that you're grouping on.  Even if you use a custom name for the group value, this won't get picked up on the chart axis no matter what you do.

oh boy,
well, it is a monthly distribution, so , no real dates whatssoever.

as for te length of the period, that's dynamic, depends on the length of the project, so it might be 6 months, or 60.

, what do you mean by third party plug in - something for crystal, or a new charting software ?and can you recommend some?

Also, what about the toolbar?

thanks

I use CRChart - it requires you to enter some fairly cryptic formulas but you can customize just about anything you want relating to charts.  IMHO it's a good value for the price and it provides lots of features that *should* already be part of Crystal...

Up to version 9 at least this problem isn't fixed - I suspect the folks at B.O. don't really see this as being a "problem."

Some brief discussion about the toolbar - I'm not sure you can remove it completely but it looks like you can disable pieces of it although B.O. "doesn't recommend" that you do so.  http://support.businessobjects.com/library/kbase/articles/c2007740.asp

Am sorry, I've read this article, but i can't do it since i am using the same toolbar.asp in many other reports, and don't want the bar there to be altered.

i thought of it to be more an option to set to hide the bar or the options.

any other suggestions?

Sorry, I don't think the toolbar is possible based on everything I've seen.  As I said earlier, the "non-recommended" task to disable pieces of it is the only thing I'm aware of.

Also, I forget to give you a link to CR Chart if you're interested for the 3rd party charting tools: http://www.threedgraphics.com/tdg/noteworthy/crystalreports.asp

>>> well, i think it is an expensive price to fix such a problem.

As I said, in my opinion Crystal should handle this w/out needing a plugin, but the sad reality is that it doesn't.  Your options are a min/max range as I explained, or reformatting the group names which may not meet your requirements, or living with the unprintable character boxes.  It is a flaw w/ Crystal so you just have to decide which bad option you're going to choose...

I believe I provided valid answers to *BOTH* questions that were asked here (this is clearly 2 unrelated questions, not one question expanding on another).

For the first question I gave a couple of alternative approaches that are Crystal-only solutions and gave a link to a 3rd party software package that can solve this issue out of the box.

For the second question I gave the correct response that it can't be done and I also provided a couple of possible workarounds to consider.

You tried frodoman,
but I don't think it was fixed,

I mean, the main point of my question was to fix the production to behave the same as my dev machine, nothing of that happened, new software was recommended.

I am still stuck with the problem.

Sorry pal, but i don't think it was solved at all.

Inteqam,

As someone who has deleted 37% of the questions that you've asked, perhaps you might benefit from re-reading this:  http://www.experts-exchange.com/help.jsp#hi39

Particularly the section "...In other words, for some questions, the correct or best answer is "You can't do that." That doesn't mean you get your points back if someone has told you that."

I disagree with your delete request completely but I'll leave it to the Mods to decide and no hard feelings either way.

Well,

Most of those 37% percent deleted, was because people told me that "I cannot do it" but i did it in away or another,  Usually when i don't fix my problem and no one does, i keep it, maybe someday someone fixes it, or i fix it.

I don't care, you want the point, i'll give you the points, just ask for them,

ANd.... don't tell me "you cannot do it", since what you are saying is against reasoning, I told you that the main question (the one which if you would have answered, you would have gotten the points)  is the chart question, And that this chart is working fine on my machine, I think the issue is not even related Crystal, it is related to windows. but you didn't even go that way.

Sorry again,
you want the points you can have them, but be sure that they are not for your answers in this question.
