Hi Experts,

Could someone explain compression on 56K modems? Does 56Kb include or exclude compression? In tests, I seem to be able to get download speeds of up to 9 or 10 KB per second from a 56Kb modem; by contrast, I only get about 4.6KB for graphics. What compression algorithms are being used? Gzip? Any help to explain how this works would be greatly appreciated.

Yes your modem uses compression.. If you are downloading a zip file or graphic, it wont work because these are already compressed. anything in text mode (html, txt, etc..) will be compressed..
