"Track changes" component?

I need something other than Microsoft Word to track changes to two documents. A user submits two versions of a document and wants a solution to compare the two documents in the same way that MS Word does to highlight inserted and deleted text.

The solution needs to run on a server (intranet) - the user would like to avoid automating MS Word if possible.

Any suggestions?
