I had this cd drive installed in another machine.  I am trying to install it in a new dell.  I connect it to the the power cable and to the ribbon cable that is shared with the other cd drive in the box and when I reboot the machine freezes.
There are three positions for a jumper in the back of the drive and a jumper is in the middle position.  any advice would be appreciated.

The three positions are Master, Slave and cable select. Often in that order, starting closest to the power socket. If there are no markings to clarify the matter, remove the other device, so this unit is the only one on the channel and boot. Post screen should tell you whether the unit is seen as a master or slave. Try it in each position until it is seen as a slave, then connect the other as master.
