Can anyone tell me what can I do to retrieve an admin password which was lost?  I can retrieve the data from the machine but I would not like  to have to wipe the whole system and build from scratch.  Any suggestions or tips would grately be appreciated.

Can anyone tell me how an administrator of a bona fide server can simply lose passwords?

The answer is: Use the OS CD that is certified by the vendor, in this case, MicroSoft.

This is called being selective, forgetting words like format. What to do is overwrite the OS directory. Preferably, delete the directory first, to ensure all traces of the old one are gone, which can include bugs and malware. Best to boot diskette for that.

Know that you cannot run such process by booting the OS, it won't let you tamper with the booted OS, so unless the HD is multiboot, you need to boot the cd or FD.
