my first thoughts when i read your post were "use google you lazy git" :)

After looking myself though I realised that the vast majority of reviews and comparisons of sempron / athlon processors dont actually match like for like.  Anandtech tested a sempron 3100 against an athlon xp 2200 for some reason?  doesn't seem to be fair does it?

Any way eventually found this but its not in english.  The benchmarks can still be read though and if you can always put it through googles translator.

they actually tested a Sempron 2800 against an Athlon XP barton 2800.

Basically the Athlon XP's are better (barton core atleast) for the performance. Athlon XP Bartons have a 512k L2 cache being the main difference making there performance a fair bit better as many benchmarks will show, (im sure you can google for these if need be). Whereas the Semprons have a 256k L2 cache, making them pretty much the same as there even older counterparts the Thunderbirds, aswell as the XP thouroghbred's.
The only different one at the moment in the Sempron range is the 3100+ which has a 754pin socket which will fit the Athlon 64bit boards, so you can basically get the new equipment now and buy the 64bit chip later when you can afford it sorta thing :)

add -on to Techyboo post

The Sempron from 3100+ and successors are a crippled Athlon 64 with the 64bit disabled, no dual channel availability and half the cache .It will fit the 754 socket as all new real Athlon 64 will go 939 socket.

Perhaps the end of socket A is seen here.

That's right, the Sempron is the successor to the Duron, and they didn't want to sully the Athlon name, which they are promoting for their 64-bit processors.

What has happened, is the Sempron processors are, in effect, repackaged versions of the old Athlons. The old high-end Athlon processors have remained as athlons, whilst the lower end ones have been repackaged and remarketed as Semprons, so the answer to your question is, as always, it depends on the model.

If you go out and buy a Sempron 2300, for example, it is definately going to be worse than an Athlon 64 3800+, generally if you just go with the model number you will end up with the better proccessor. As has been mentioned, checking http://www.tomshardware.com is never a bad idea, it is a very comprehensive free online hardware guide, with many reviews.

Good Luck making a choice
