Win2k registry went bad. Help please!

Windows 2k keeps rebooting at the blue screen, saying,

Stop: 0xc0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

I don't have the registry backup.

I know that there is a directory REPAIR under WINNT\SYSTEM32 but it contains registry hives that are too old.

My question is does windows 2k automatically backup the registry somewhere on the system? If yes that where is it?

Thank you.

The contents of the %systemroot%\System32\REPAIR folder are usually updated when you create or update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD), which also contains backup copies of parts of your registry.

Have you tried booting to Last Known Good configuration? That is the closest thing to a "backup copy" of the registry that Windows 2000 provides other than via the ERD.

I did tried that, but it won't help. It just goes on rebooting and rebooting.

Your current installation is pretty much hosed, then. You can boot to the Windows 2000 CD and attempt a repair install, or install a clean OS into a new folder - both of which will probably allow you to get access to the system in order to back up your files, or just reinstall whatever software you need and continue using it.

Either way, I'd recomend running a thorough chkdsk on this drive as soon as you get a working OS installation, just to make sure it isn't a failing hard drive that caused your registry corruption in the first place.

So, is it for sure that windows 2000 does not do any backup of the registry by design? Any documentation on this matter? or undocumented material?  Thank you, all.

Other than Last Known Good configuration, no automatic registry backups are made in a vanilla Win2k install. System Restore points weren't added until XP / 2003, and it's up to the user / administrator to implement a backup solution (or maintain a current ERD for use in situations like this).
