Java PE notifier - experts please subscribe

This thread is the continuation of
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Programming_Languages/Java/Q_21100047.html

Please use this thread for:
- reporting troubles  - homeworks that want full code; experts that post full codes to homeworks (some of the new experts are just doing this -- the result will be just deleting the answer and speaking to the expert and hopefully they will get the message without involving Mods), duplicate accounts, duplicate questions (so I can delete the duplicate one), "Points for" questions, mail address, personal information, personal attacks. If you does not feel comfortable to report something here, my mail is in my profile and most of the time it works.
- asking for reopening, for grade reviews, for points redestribution, for educating an user for something (any of the above or whatever)
- asking to clean a question from off-topic comments (we do have enough of them)

Also if someone starts to treat you bad (no matter if it is an Asker or an expert) just call me in the question.

For any of these activities, if I cannot help, I will make sure I will notify the Moderators (via mail or via CS)

In short - if you need me somewhere to do something - post here. I will make sure to post here any time when I leave for a day or more.

And let me use this chance to say "Thanks" to every one of you. For all that you are doing!

:)) I just had troubles in another area from an Asker that said "This guy is anoying, someone please take his "EE Cleanup Volunteer" status away!" And all this because I posted a recommendation in the question he had asked and forgot for... 31 days :)
So thanks ;) This makes me still trust that doing Cleanup I do something good

For the other things - just trying to do my best so this area looks at the best possible way :) And to make sure that we do not miss questions/troubles/ whatever because of not having a way to communicate

Great:) And I will have only A's from the Mods in the Cleanup :)

For the Feedback - I do not know... Owners wanted it :)
0

TimYatesCommented:
Yeah, but there is an argument that what matters on EE is qhether or not the solution given works.  Not how many people bothered to click a link and tick a box.  It is up to the Asker for each question to decide if a solution has been given, and grade the answer based on the quality of the solution...  I cannot forsee a point where an asker will either not try a solution, or not accept an aswer based on feedback.

Also, it's being misused for petty feuds and suplementary questions ;-)

I know some people wanted it, and this isn't the place, so I'll shut up about it now ;-)

I just reckon a search that is orderable by date is a more pressing requirement for the site...

And I know that the "Last 10 grades" was a lot of DB access for (basically) a row of "A"'s, but even then, they shouldn't affect whether the answerer accepts an answer or not ;-)

Hehehe, it's the morning again!  I'm complaining ;-)

Giant2,

I already warned you once and you posted the full codes again. The third time I will ask an Administrator to review your acount for systematically giving full codes to homeworks. This is a homework - except if you really believe that someone will give such compiler caughtable exceptions on a job interview? For a Java job?

Please think a little before believeing in claims that this is not homework. There are more important things than points. Ethics for example.

Giant2Commented:
>The third time I will ask an Administrator to review your acount for systematically giving full codes to homeworks
No problem for me. I suggest you or Administrator to see even the thread where I post an answer and was accepted other that give a full code. Or even when thread is closed (points not for me), but the asker continue the question because he/she not resolved with the post he/she accepted before. [About ethics]

>This is a homework
As I told. Why not delete the post?
you told:
>Because I would like to hear what the Asker has to tell us
Now you say:
>I won't delete  because now we have some discussion here but maybe not a bad idea to think a little before accepting a claim that this is not a homework.

Now the Asker give an answer. Delete the thread or leave it open? What is the final decision?
If the thread leaved open It's normal that each Expert could answer to the question.

>There are more important things than points. Ethics for example.
no other comment this. Each Expert know what he/she did and do (even here).

Sincerely Giant.

VenabiliAuthor Commented:
I cannot delete something before it is a homework because experts are allowed to post in teacher's mode. Get the idea?

I have nothing against you answering such posts. Noone has. But do not do all the work for them.

If you had received points for a full answer to a homework, it is not my trouble. I cannot check every single comment. But you may want to ask yourself if you had not lost the spirit of EE somewhere on the way... It is a site for help, not for getting homeworks done.

That is all from me on the topic. as long as I see full codes to homeworks, I will delete them. And if they are posted too often from one expert, they will need to ask some questions.

So now calm down.

Giant2Commented:
>I cannot delete something before it is a homework because experts are allowed to post in teacher's mode.
Sorry, but I don't understand. My post were deleted, or am not I seeing them?

>So now calm down.
No problem. I'm really calm because I'm sure "not lost the spirit of EE". You can see in my previous posts on previous threads.
0

VenabiliAuthor Commented:
Argh. What I meant was:
"I cannot delete something because it is a homework "

I cannot delete the whole question but I delete the full answers. Experts can answer in Teacher's mode - to explain and to guide but not to do the whole work. So the homwwork questions stay, but the full answers are deleted :)

Just do not write the people's homework :)

btw: It is not fun to see the homework you had given to the students in EE; and it is definitely less fun to receive at the end from the students something  from EE. :)

He does not need the answer anymore, the links had not helped so he wants to delete. It is his right! And he has concrete trouble in a concrete code and instead of working with him you just post links to codes to do this...

And what's wrong with the last one? As far as I see you got the points....
0

Giant2Commented:
>I hope you will post like this and when you...
Sure! But the post you do don't make sure the "correct" answer will be accepted anymore. ;)

3rd: no problem for me. I insert it only if there is other expert to answer or it be deleted.

4th: From the words exchanged I believe the post will be deleted. For this reason I post the link.
0

VenabiliAuthor Commented:
:) He had posted something, you had helped him to continue - I told you yesterday - it's ok :)

The important thing in such questions is: Do ask the Asker to show you some work and progress and then help. But do not start from the beginning giving him all they need - in a question with compilation errors? Had you asked yourself why he had not just tried tocompile it (if you receive such questions in an interview, what will you do - post in a phorum or start the compiler?)

>>Sure! But the post you do don't make sure the "correct" answer will be accepted anymore. ;)
Because I cannot force it. The points belong to the Asker. In the split matter - it is their choice to split or not - I am giving the options. If they say yes - it's ok. If not - I cannot just change it from nowhere (the accepted answer is also true). The only way to force a reassigning is when it is obvious that NOT an answer is accepted when the real answer is there. Which in both cases is not the case:( But if the Askers reappear - I'll reopen)

I know my english is not the best, but believe this is really clear: "I see that in other thread I give a general solution, but accepted a solution CODED". I hope you remember some weeks ago. :)
I'm not english 100%, so I understand that one word in one language is used in different manner in another. I believe even this is be tolerant and ethic correct. All the world is not english speaking! So some word mixed to other could seem one thing, but it isn't.

>Had you asked yourself why he had not just tried tocompile it
I believe each of us was a beginner. When I start I see code and code and ask me "what it does?". "why is it written in this manner?" All these thinks before compiling and use a compiler (for a beginner could be hard to know what is the need of a compiler for a portable code like java one).

>Because I cannot force...
I know. About this problem (it's not only mine...[some post before there was another]) I told more on 2 other old threads.

Now, to close all about this.
Some word go around the air about that thread. I hope all we can learn from this. Respect each other and try to understand the why of each action done before do and say anything. Let's think before launch the first stone!

At http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Programming_Languages/Java/Q_21166388.html
a wrong comment is accepted as assisted answer:

The question was:
replace
>>john's beer
>>into:
>>john\'s beer

Well, objects' solution marked as assisted answer (which is even repeated further on) simply does NOT work:

        String s = "john's beer";
        System.out.println(s.replaceAll("'", "\\'"));
prints
        john's beer  (unchanged)

I was the first one who posted the correct solution.

And about the accepted answer:
the answer of Naeemg for the single quotes is just a copy of mine
and the answer for
replace
     >>john"s beer
     >>into:
     >>john\"s beer
doesn't produce the needed string:

      String s = "john\"s beer";
      str = str.replaceAll("\"", "\\\\'");

prints

      john\'s beer

Personal coments over another expert? Please reread the help page and the Membership Agreement.

everyone,

The idea of this thread was to make the area  a better place; not to give you a place for personal accusations and insults....

The homework question is handled and the full codes deleted.

I definitely start to wonder why I at all care for this area when some experts continiously are doing the same things over and over.

When the question is homework -- NEVER post a full code. You can help wiith guideliness; you can fix their code EXPLAINING why it is so (but you cannot just fix and post it).
Homework --> go to teacher Mode.

rianto's last comment says:

"I've posted another question regarding how to insert the Thai characters correctly inside MS SQL DB under username: "rospcc", and give 500 points."

Which sounds like a multi to me...  may not be though I suppose...

In the following question,

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Programming_Languages/Java/Q_21241442.html#12819546

keteracel gave a source coden but tomboshell has given a usefull link and was the first to suggest to use tags instead of smiley images, and i suggested to use ascii smileys.
I think splitting the points would have been much fair.

Venabili,

I think Jsasimon needs to be told here that he should not post such a large amount of code for a question which is in a language that looks like it has come straight out of a teacher's assignment sheet:

God, this guy will jump out of the window if someone does not tell them not to, if we believe to his statements ;) This time of the year is not fun with these homeworks... And we still have newbies that are ready to do homeworks for points. Phew....

Hi Venabili,

The author of this question has closed it accepting one answer, and asked how to split the points :

Thanks Venabilli.
4000+??? My goodness. I guess you need a vacation after handling those :°)
0

VenabiliAuthor Commented:
Yes.. I had not mistaken a '0'. 4 thousand (in a few mail accounts which forward all mails in one mailbox for handling so all was in one place..). :( THere were 9000 actually but 5000 went in the Trash very fast... and only 4000 to check really. And this only for 10 days (+3 days.. while I was sorting the ones from the previous 10 days...). Looks like all the spammers and so on had been very active around Christmas...

Tim,

Posted :) And will take care.
As for the vacation... it was not exactly nice but at least it was some time off - although almost all the time I wished I had been at work... at least to keep my mind busy. :)
Hope you had great vacation :)

Why doesn't feedback work the other way?

Why can Axter (the rudest person I have EVER seen on the Java TA), leave me feedback like this:

>> Was uncooperative, and attempted to post an opinion on a subject that was outside of the scope of his/her understanding.

Yet, I cannot put "Rude, intollerable tw*t" in his feedback in response?

The question (if you've got a strong stomach) is here:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Programming_Languages/Java/Q_21300351.html

krakatoa got a bad review too (worse than mine for some reason)...  Yet Webstorm got a "Good insight" comment...

I have to say that my standpoint on Feedback has allways been that "it's rubbish"

Hmph...

Tim "uncooperative limited-understanding" Yates.

give your feedback here...

generally, you can feedback asker if you participated to his/her question, just replace qid value by the question ID, and mid value by the member ID

This is sick. I guess that feedback should not be allowed to appear on somebody's profile unless a moderator or page-editor approves it - but again, there will be too many feedbacks to approve in that case.

Hi all,

Sorry for the lack of response from me these days...
The winter finally caught us (it is ~-20C here these days), some flu started to spread around so half the country is ill... including some people from my team here so the workflow just doubled... and I almost broke my leg a few days ago as an addition to all - I hate when it becomes icy:))
However.... I am back now, I am reading my mails and will start to answer and react on them soon...

Tim and Webstorm,
If you want some feedback removed, ask in CS :)
Backdoors are not good idea :) Feeddback in thius way is not very nice one either... but....

Webstorm,
Got these. Thanks

Unfortunately I can't install the JMF and try to debug his small piece of code, so I'd appreciate it if somebody can do that.

Today is a bad day for me - exactly 4 years ago my Dad died, 3 days before making 45. Please have a drink for him- he was a very special person.

Last one for this thread then...

First there was this:

Then came:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Programming/Programming_Languages/Java/Q_21334913.html

Which seems to be basically the same question, and now it appears that the asker wants it to wander off into the realms of email...

Fair play to bloodredsun for trying to help...  but EE isn't for refactoring entire swathes of code ;-)
