Hey,

I tried to use .htaccess to define my own page for a custom error, but am still getting Internet Explorer's dumb 404 error page.

Any thoughts?

If you are still running into trouble, it might be due to your settings.  Try putting the line that does the redirecting in your httpd.conf file instead.
