DSL download speeds are ALOT slower when I connect a router.

Ok, heres my problem: I just recently set up a small network in my room.  I am in the U.S. Army and my roomate and I both have a laptop that are less then a year old. We both have pretty much the same specs. I am using a Belkin Cable/DSL Gateway Router. We both are using the same exact cables from the router to our computers. But for some reason he has a much greater dowload speed than i am.  My bytes recieved, after having my computer online for a day, will barely reach ten thousand.  He, on the other hand, gets into the millions within minutes.  I tried adjusting my settings to match his and still no luck.  Now when i connect to the modem directly without the use of the router(which of course my roomate can no longer connect), i have a connection speed that beats his. I tried updating my network card, and i also tried using a D-Link DI-704P router but still no luck. Also when we use our P2P sharing program, i only get a dowload speed of 2-30 kb/s.  He gets anywhere from 30-100 kb/s. I've asked so many people, called tech support, and tried tweaking programs for the past month. I've even tried switching ISP's!! I would love to have my speed back to the way it was before i started using that god-forsaken router!! PLEEEASE help me!

Could be that your MTU settings are different than your roomates.  Also, ck your NIC in the device manager and see if it is set at Automode, 10/100, etc.  You may try forcing it to 100 Full and see if that helps.

There are a number of tweaks you can do within your own system.  Feel free to go to my site for further explanation of these, including the proper way to determine the MTU size and how to configure it within your registry.  Also the TCP Send/Receive window size.  (The MTU size for DSL must be < 1492, whereas cable is 1500)  Check out the Networking section, and possibly the advanced Performance options under XP:

BTW:  Since I see you are running a P2P program, I would suggest you do a full system maintenance ck including spyware and malware removal.  Clean out your temp folder, prefetch folder, defrag, etc. etc....  All these steps are also included on the site above.

ok, im trying to determine my max mtu size right now using the steps on your site. when i put in a value too high, it comes up saying "packet needs to be defragmented but DF set" like your site said it should. but at a certain point, as im still lowering my ping value, it comes up that the "request timed out". now is that the point where i should set my max mtu? but i kept going lower and lower and finally at 1412, it stops and finally goes through. so is this the point where i should set my max mtu? isnt that low for a dsl connection? thank you for your comments and im going to keep trying the other options on your site.
ok i changed my mtu size, and tried adjusting the default send/receive window but still only gettin in the low thousands. it seemed to have worked a little, because i got to about 2,000 within a few minutes. but still not even close to the millions that my roomate is getting. i dont understnad why if i connect directly to the modem i get a good connection but not with the router?? but im still tryin more options on your site..thanks for the comment!
Try setting the MAX MTU at 1412 and see if that helps.  If it does not, then move it back to 1492, the recommended setting for DSL...

(I have seen packet fragmentation in some sites all the way down into the 700's, forms that could not be loaded unless the user brought their MTU size way down.)

You might also make some speed tests via DSLReports...

Speedguide is another useful site, which will add content to my site:

i tried all of your techniques, but still no millions of bytes recieved. do u think it may be the router, or the way my cpu is configured with the router?? but still ANY more helpful hints will be GREAT.
also, does bytes recieved really even mean anything??

Well i tried adjusting my MTU and my RWIN totals and i found a combination that worked! So my speed has increased by a good amount.  I tried the speed tests on my cpu and my roomates computer and we both have about the same now. Plus we both used your info to clean our computers of alot of spyware that had infected our computer! So your adviced helped and im not going to pay attention to bytes recieved anymore. Thanks alot for the help!
*grin*

Glad my suggestions worked..!!  I try to write new articles each week, so feel free to keep cking back into the site...

And thanks..
