Hi, I have a TIME (UK) laptop which will only power up 1 time in 10 (no pun intended!). I've removed the battery for 10 minutes, used the Reset button on the rear, but still it only seems to start sporadically. When it does start, Windows XP gets to the desktop and the I see "Windows has encountered an error and needs to shutdown". Tried swapping out the 2 x 256MB RAM sticks, no change.

Is there a power-on key combo which can do further resets? When I DO get into the BIOS, all looks normal.

I really need to get the data off this machine before I get "mechanical" about this, so any help appreciated!

Thanks,

Keve.

After your machine beeps after its self-test, press F8 and select Last Known Good Configuration. If that works, then some driver or software that starts when you log in is to blame.

If it fails, try again and select Safe Mode. If that works, then some driver or software is to blame. If it still fails, then it is likely a hardware issue, like your built-in memory or system board.

Use Safe Mode with Networking to copy your data to another machine. Failing that, you can of course put the drive in another machine to save your data.

See the Microsoft Knowledge Base (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;KBHOWTO) for startup problems. They have some very good articles on how to find the offending program.

Here's one page called "Resources for troubleshooting startup problems in Windows XP": http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308041&Product=winxp
