"Search" function not working

For some reason now I cannot use Windows 2003's Search feature. When I click on the "Search" icon/program in the start menu nothing happens. Seems to have happened on some of our Win XP machines as well.

This is the general search fix in XP
Might work in 2003

Go to My Computer | tools  | folder options  | view
check show all files

next open a dos prompt and cd to windows or winnt

cd windows
next type this:
attrib -s -h -r inf

Then open Explorer and go to Windows\Inf.  Locate the
srchasst.inf file.  Right click it and select Install.
Also have your xp cd handy

When I try that SearchMenuFix.exe it says

Component 'MSCOMCTL.OCX' or one of its dependencies is not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.

The registry fix did not work either.
