What version of outlook you have ?

If it is 2002 or 2003 ,first make a backup of all your contacts , then go to tools --> email accounts ----> view or change existing directories or address book --> next
Double click on the address book listed and remove outlook address book.
Add a new one .  import all the contacts back and see if that solves the issue

If it is 2000 , Try removing and adding an address book going to tools ---> services or tools --> email accounts
depending on what mode of Outlook you have , corporate or IMO

Thanks for your help on this.   I tried removing and adding the address book, but that did not work.    I then tried running a repair installation of office, but again that did not work, so in the end I backed up all the information, uninstalled, and reinstalled office which solved the problem.   A strange one though.   Many thanks again.
