Hi,
I have a HP Deskjet 940c printer. It works great with my laptop... just plug in the USB cable and print.
On my Desktop I also have Windows 2000 as the laptop.
It is Intel P4 2.00GHz 523,568 KB RAM Servive Pack 3

I selected Add Printer, Wizard comes up, Local Printer, Auto detect Plug and Play, Windows unable to detect....,
went into setup selected USB001   Virtual Printer Port for USB, asks if I want Test page, Yes, the printer starts to run and the start to go in to printer......but it goes through without printing anything.. ??? What do I do??

Thank you... I have to print some docs by tonight!!

On the desktop have you installed the software that came with the printer?  Try that and post your results.  If you don't have the CD that came with the printer, you can download the drivers at www.hp.com

Ok, I uninstalled and reinstalled, now it prints about 1/2" of the color test page about 1/4 of the way down a clean sheet then, it rolls out unfinished.

:(

Now what?

Hi! I just got a thought.... Nothing has worked w/USB ports...

I have 4 USB ports, 2 on front and 2 on back. I bought this system from BestBuy with Windows XP installed. I CHANGED it to Windows 2000 and had to get all new drivers for my DVD/CD, etc, ect...

Do I need any drivers for my USBs to work properly??

;O

You need USB drivers.  Try to find them online.  Although Windows 2000 usually will install these for you.  See if you can find them online.

What do I search for? Windows 2000 USB drivers
I found where one said the Windows Update get all needed USB drivers. I installed the SP4 like my laptop has.

Tried printing and it still does the same thing.

:( ????

On reboot it showed "Found New Hardware Wizard" "An error occurred during the installation of the device"

I try again, it found "h:\winnt\inf\usb.inf", I clicked Next.. to install it and it showed "Found New Hardware Wizard" "An error occurred during the installation of the device"

What we need to do is to install the drivers for the printer from the HP site:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?product=59129&lang=en&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&os=181&softwareitem=dj1201en

Also check the install information page at HP for your printer:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/setupCategory?product=59129&lang=en&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&

Try this and let me know what happens.  It should install with no problems.

Wow that was so cool!

It sensed my Deskjet 940c and said there is no driver installed for it....
it continued to download, install, make default printer and did a great job....
NO ERRORS!

Then I went to the printer properties and hit print test page and it did the SAME thing... printed the first 1/2" of the color Windows logo and spit it out.

I rechecked it and it showed latest driver, no problems....

No not for USB :(  Can you connect the printer via the printer  cable instead of USB to see if we get the same problem?  Are you sure that you are not really low on disk space?  Have you checked Event  Viewer to see if there are any specific errors?

I'll take you through the self test page which specifies the printer functionality:
1.  Turn the printer off and remove the cable from the back of the printer.  This is the cable that connects the printer to the computer.
2.  Turn the printer on.
3.  Press and hold the Resume button for approximately five seconds.
4.  Release the Resume button.
5.  After the printer prints the sample page, reconnect the printer cable.

bill
I had WinXP and I formated and installed 2000
Ken
Please perform the steps and let me know the result.

Bill,

Follow these steps to 'refresh' the USB ports and resolve the issue:

1. Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager button and double-click the Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
3. Click the plus sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
4. Click the plus sign next to USB ROOT HUB (you can find more than one entries)
If you find an entry named USB Printing support or HP (DeskJet/Inkjet) PRINTER related entries or UNKNOWN devices--- right-click on the USB ROOT HUB that contains this entries > Uninstall/Remove > OK. If the computer ask for a restart click NO
5. Click Apply and then click OK.

Please post your results.  Good Luck!

You were really only supposed to do the one that said HP  but not to worry, Windows will recognize the Root Hub.  Let me know what results you get, it should resolve the issue :)

I rebooted and the two Root Hubs are now reinstalled.
I guess I need to reinstall my HP drivers now...

I'd like to confirm if there is any previous step first....

Thanks, Bill

I got it.... thank you for your help!
I reinstalled the printer software etc...

But.. I found two more USB slots on the back of my machine... plugged into one of them and it worked.. How do I get the other two on the back working, or showing up as a choice in the printer setup?

The one on the front of the machine is the one I want to use.. because I transfer the printer from one machine to the next.

??

Thanks, Bill :)
