Configure Exchange Server 2000 for sending and receiving external mail(Internet mail)

Hello experts,

I currently installed my first Exchange Server 2000 in Windows 2000 which is not directly connected to internet and has only 1 Lancard. I have my domain controler and 1 win2k Server connected directly to internet.

We have an internet email that has a POP3 and SMTP server.
let say: POP3: mail.ourcompany.com and SMTP: mail.ourcompany.com also.

Usually what we do is configure our outlook to send/receive email using that POP3 and SMTP respectively.

But we explore now and take the possibilty of holding our own email server..So we want to try it using exchange server.

To make it short, what we want to do is to get all the emails from our internet mail server and store all of them in our Exchange Server and distribute in our users using outlook.Same as in sending emails..

Is it possible in Exchange Server?

Im new to exchange Server, can you please teach me step by step.
I cannot find any books that fits in my situation.

   Thanks...

Hi,

your Exchange server speaks POP3 but only to clients. If you want your exchange server to fetch mails from your ISPs POP3 Server you need somethins like POPCON (http://www.popcon.de/popcon.htm).

Sending mails with SMTP is easier. Your only have to configure a smtp connector:
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Configuring-SMTP-Connector.html

But you maybe get problems with some providers (AOL will only accept mails from email domains with reverse DNS Records). Ask your ISP to enter a reverse lookup record. Your also have to enter the FQDN (of the reverse lookup) in the virtual smtp server config.
- Click Start, point to All Programs, point to MicrosoftExchange, and then click System Manager.
- In the console tree, expand Servers, expand <Server Name>, expand Protocols, and then expand SMTP.
- Right-click <Your Outgoing SMTP Virtual Server>, and then click Properties.
- Click the Delivery tab, and then click Advanced. The Advanced Delivery dialog box appears
Also configure the external DNS if your internal DNS can't resolv external domains.

Hi Walzing,

Thanks for immediate response,,i will try all your solutions and take some time to read your links..Im sorry because im really new to exchange 2000.

We are not on static IP thats another problem maybe. Our ISP serves solely for internet connection. Our internet mail server are hosted by other company. Can i still do this?

Thanks again..
Hi,

if you are not on a static IP, you should use the SMTP Server of your ISP to relay the outgoing mail. Therefore you maybe have to authenticate to the ISP smtp server (Ask your ISP).

If you want to fetch the mails with POP3 it's not needed to have a static IP.

Hi,

Walzing, can you teach the step-by-step procedure? Where should i begin? What i have now is 1 Domain Controller(Internal DNS,Active Directory,DHCP), 1 Internet Server(Dynamic IP from ISP), 1 Exchange Server(Member Server)..All are win2k Advance Server.

Anybody's comment are welcome and very much appreiated.

Hi,
Well if there is no other way to collect my mails from external mail server and store it in exchange without using 3rdParty software..maybe i will try the one you refer..

Just want to ask if POPCon collect all mails at the same time without putting username and password of individual users?

Because somebody tell me to use POPBeamer but when i try, i need to supply all the username and password of all our internetmail users and point to the AD account users to store their mails..In this situation, if the user change their intermail password on a webmail, my POPBeamer will not work because the password is now different. So i need to edit again.

But, i already download a trial version of POPCon...I will install it maybe tommorow..

  You're a great help Walzing!

Hi,

you can use POPBeamer or other tools. But you will have to supply username password for each user. Another way is to use ETRN (but than you will not have POP3 MAilboxes at ISP).

Hi,
How about in POPCon? Do i also need to supply username and password for each and everyone user?

another question is before, when i used just the SMTP of windows2000..i can send email on any domain. But now when i already installed Exchange..I cannot send email to something like yehey.com.What's the problem?

Hi,

yes you will.

First of all you need to check DNS. Try nslookup from your exchange server.
- nslookup
- set q=MX
- yehey.com
Can you send emails to other domains?

cu
Bjoern
Hi
Yes i can send to other...except from yehey.com..and also to hotmail...
when i try to ping yehey.com and hotmail.com it says request timedout.
But all other sites or domain its well replied...

Its the result of nslookup

Default Server:  aptdc.aptech-ort.loc
Address:  192.168.0.2

> set q=MX
> yehey.com
Server:  aptdc.aptech-ort.loc
Address:  192.168.0.2

Non-authoritative answer:
yehey.com       MX preference = 20, mail exchanger
yehey.com       MX preference = 10, mail exchanger

smtp.yehey.com  internet address = 206.169.92.52
mail3.yehey.com internet address = 206.169.92.52
Hi,

so you have some problems with your DNS. Try:
- nslookup
- server 212.6.64.161
- set q=MX
- yehey.com

or your firewall blocks it.

cu
Bjoern
Hi,

your last post shows that your DNS is working.
But Ping is maybe blocked by your or their firewall. Try this

telnet smtp.yehy.com 25

and

telnet mail3.yehey.com 25

What do you get?

cu
Bjoern
Heres' the result...I dont have a firewall...

G:\>nslookup
Default Server:  aptdc.aptech-ort.loc
Address:  192.168.0.2

> server 212.6.64.161
Default Server:  dns1.ewetel.net
Address:  212.6.64.161

> set q=MX
> yehey.com
Server:  dns1.ewetel.net
Address:  212.6.64.161

Non-authoritative answer:
yehey.com       MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = mai
yehey.com       MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = smt

yehey.com       nameserver = ns4.teamyehey.com
yehey.com       nameserver = ns1.teamyehey.com
yehey.com       nameserver = ns2.teamyehey.com
mail3.yehey.com internet address = 206.169.92.52
smtp.yehey.com  internet address = 206.169.92.52
ns1.teamyehey.com       internet address = 206.169.92.51
ns4.teamyehey.com       internet address = 202.147.26.12
Can you ping www.yahoo.com on your PC?
when i telnet mail3.yehey.com 25 and ehlo, here is the result

220 sanfo-linux-2.teamyehey.com ESMTP
250-sanfo-linux-2.teamyehey.com
250-PIPELINING
250-8BITMIME
250 SIZE 6291456
Hi,

so you can reach the mail server of yehey.com. Thats a good sign. Pls try this with mail3.yehey.com

Im looking forward to solve my problem..
Hi Walzing,,,

Thank you very much for your assistance..Althoug i did not use POPCon as your recommendation, the important thing now is i have the idea on what to do.I did not use POPCon because i cannot see an english version of it to try.And also as you have said, i need to configure every user of our internet mail to POPCon and point to their user in exchange for storing their mails to their corresponding mailbox..Its the same thing in POPBeamer.

The only problem i have now is, i cannot send mails to yehey.com. Anyway, i will still look why is it happen.

Because of your thoughtfullness, i will reward to you this 500points.. :)

Walzing, Sooner or later i we will host our own mail server..can i have your email so i can ask you if i have a problem?

Thanks!

sirknight
Hi,

thank you very much. But I will not give out my email adress on this site (because of spam). I work at a german company (www.cigate.de). Just take a look at google and you will find my email.
