Does anyone know software to diagnose an external USB/firewire harddisk with S.M.A.R.T. or something like that to be sure that the drive is fine?

You can also try the manufacturer's diagnostic program, but those are designed to be run directly off an IDE controller, so I don't know what USB will do to the results.  You could always take the drive out of the enclosure and connect it directly to the IDE controller.
