How to configure an auto-response for a shared mailbox

Our Claims department has a mailbox that receives internet mail from external agents.  

They'd like to set up an auto reply message for internet mail received.

I have shared out the mailbox across multiple outlook 97 clients running off Exchange 5.5 server.

What is the proper method to create an auto-response in this scenario.  Public Folders is not an option.

The usual method would be to configure an Outlook client to open that mailbox, configure the rule and then close it again. Make sure the rule is server side.
You could either use Outlook rules or Out of Office.
Of the two Out of Office would be my preference, but Auto replies in general are hazardous. You could easily get a mail loop - for example the sender has an auto reply rule on as well.
