Dear fellow developers/Experts,

Since a couple of years know I have been using several TextEditors to aid in my development projects.

The editors I use all have the same anoying habbit, to kind off 'block' when you update a file to a slow FTP server.

As my client's FTP-server is really really slow, it takes about 30 seconds to open a single file, then when writing back the file, this takes another 30 seconds. 30 seconds you can't use working on other files, because the software just blocks any other interaction.

Therefor I would like to know I someone uses or can recommend textediting software which handles FTP interactions in the background, so that when you update one file, you can still edit other files (other html, js, css, etc).

Possibly an editor which keeps an open connection to the FTP server could work also, but then it should be able to handle multiple FTP connections simultaneously preferably.

Some side requirements would be offcourse:
- ability to handle projects/ group files as project
- syntax highlighting
- block editing

But I suppose these things are standard in a piece of software calling itself webdevelopment texteditors nowadays.

If you have the software running this possibly will not be the most difficult question to answer, but it's worth the points and would speed up my working pace a lot with the project I'm currently on.

Regards

Crimson editor I installed on my dad's pc where I'm currently at, but this one still blocks when up-/downloading files from ftp. And that's just the anoying thing. I just want to continue working on other files while uploading the first.

I haven't tried PHP Expert yet, but will try this as soon as I get home tomorrow.

Re: mandi22

I checked the shareware version of PHP Expert Editor. (From Ankord). Also this software stalls when uploading my files.

I need some kind of threaded programs which runs either a constant connection at the background, or at least handles FTP connections at the background.

I have been having the same problem with UltraEdit, I've asked the developer repeatedly to have an option in the program to keep the connection open (since in my case the login is what was the slowest, and when using save all it would open a new connection for each file, while on the same ftp account). An alternative to a text editor with this feature is using one of the tools that maps an ftp site to a network drive. I have tested some of them and if I remember correctly the only one that worked well and wasn't overly priced didn't work together with my virus scanner (Antivir).
That was Webdrive, though it seems that they might have updated this issue, see : http://www.southrivertech.com/index.php?pg=./support/webdrive/faq/2.5.html&pgr=./support/webdrive/index

I went back to look for the post I made at the UltraEdit message board, and found that Webdrive is really the only feasible option of the ones I found. When I get a chance I'll try it out again to see if I can make it work with my Antivirus software now. If you don't have antivirus software on your development machine it's worth a look.  It's 39.95$ for a single licence with 1 year of maintenance

I'll grant you this point, as this was - although thx to the efforts of the other posters - is the first solution which makes sense to me, although it isn't totally what I asked for. I give it a try, but at least I am on the track of some way of getting things working (and working in some fashion faster than I am currently working at :-S)
