The following is a similar, and I am sure related question, but alas I still need help....

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Email_Groupware/Exchange_Server/Q_21129348.html

Now only my Alaska server (windows 2003, exchange 2003) smtp service is failing.  It start, stops and takes the iisadmin service with it.  I have reinstalled IIS multiple times with no luck.

What in the world would just take down my smtp service like this?

Make sure your AV software isn't scanning Exchange or IIS

When you reinstalled IIS .. did you completely remove all IIS files or just uninstall?
After you reinstalled IIS ... did you reinstall exchange over the existing and apply SP1?
Have you combed the application logs thoroughly?

AV software is not scanning exchange or IIS....check....

uninstalled IIS and check to make sure it took the metabase file with it....didn't remove any other files....what else should I look for?
reinstalled iis, reinstalled exchange, reinstalled sp1.....check

application logs are no help, they just tell me that smtp fails over and over and over again...52 times before I cleared it....no other indications or precursors.  I did enable the smtp service to interact with the desktop and got a 1067 error....but that is just unexpected termination...no details....

You’ve updated all your end user’s email signatures. Hooray! But guess what? They’re playing around with the HTML, adding stupid taglines and ruining the imagery. Find out how you can save your signatures from end users today.

I removed iis and all metabase backups...the origional metabase file was removed by the componet wizard....

I stopped here to check the admin service and smtp.....all is well...has been for over 10 minutes....the smtp stays running.....
going to try and install exchange using the repair mode next and patch with sp1.....

Have you seen these?

Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB827214):
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=827214

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/..&DisplayLang=en

Update for Exchange Server 2003 (KB885264):

BTW ... are you running SP1 for Exchange or no? (just curious) ...

I'll try to dig up an article on completely removing IIS ... seems like I have one somewhere ... will be back in a little while ... dinner time =)

ok...after the reinstall of iis the smtp and all iis services are fine.....

installed exchange, patched with sp1 and everything breaks....inetinfo.exe crashing and restarting about every 50 seconds.....

tried to put on the patch from Q884264 but something in SP1 is blocking....
