unkown device on hi-grade notino R5400S, must be wireless LAN?

I have just installed win xp pro on a customers laptop and am having a little trouble. I cannot install the wireless lan driver (although i supposedly have the correct driver from hi-grade's ftp site!). i have an unknown device in the device manager, is this the wireless lan without the driver installed? is there a generic wireless lan driver i could use? i have been trawling around and believe this could be a gemtek wireless device but have even tried downloading some of their drivers to no avail. Please help, i cannot use the original disk that came with the machine as (suprise suprise) they have lost it.

many thanks

You might also try looking at the Device Manager to see if it lists the Driver Name although it may not be loaded, and also lookup System Information from the start menu>Accessories>System Tools and choose System Information.  These may tell you at least who the wireless lan card is made by, and possibly more information needed to search for the needed driver.
