Receiving Microsoft word or excel attachments as .DAT files

Company 1 sends Company 2 a microsoft word or excel file.
When company 2 receives attachment, it is somehow converted to a .DAT file.
When you try to convert to Word or Excel, data is just garbage.
Company 2 can send Company 1 an attahcment just fine.
Company 1 claims this problem only occurs with Company 2.

Company 1 (It looks like they may be on Microsoft Mail)
Comany 2 (Lotus Notes R5)

Any help or direction would really be appreciated.

If I recall this correctly, it's an MS Mail problem. Users use Outlook, and set the outgoing mail format to 'MS Rich Text'.  Try to convince them to set this to 'text'

I must say it's been a while since I had problems like this myself, so I guess upgrading Domino may help :-)
