Event Log Error

Unable to contact a DHCP server. The Automatic Private IP Address xxxxxxx will be assigned to dial-in clients. Clients may be unable to access resources on the network.

Can someone explain this error?
My server is co-located and I use Terminal Server to administrate it. Does TS require RAS? I am concerned someone is maybe trying to gain access to my server.
Don't wan't to disable something then, not be able to connect to it.

Thanks
Andy

Hi andy_booth,
Where exactly are you seeing this error?

If I were to hazard a guess, are you running RRAS on this server?  If so, it's configured to look up an IP address from a DHCP server rather than use a local pool.

Can you describe how exactly you connect to your server?  Is it simply making a TS connection to it's public IP address, or do you establish a VPN connection first?

Hi Scampgb,

I see the error in the system eventlog of my server.

I do not use VPN's, this is a Windows Webserver providing IIS5 websites. To administrate the server, I connect to it's ip address.

Hope you can help more.

Regards
Andy

Could you please give me a little more info about the message?

Is it in the application, system or security log?

What message number does it have and what source does it have?

Also - how frequently is this appearing in your log?

Last night it appears 11 times within a 10 minute block.
My Server crashed and rebooted last night, I am concerned this is related.

Well - that error is definately from Routing & Remote Access.
I suggest that you double-check if it's installed on the server, and remove it if you don't need it.

Is RAS required for Terminal Server?

Where can I disable this if it's not required?

Thanks
Andy

RAS is not required for terminal services, no.
You might have it installed though :-)

You should be able to get to it in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows Components

I have disabled the service, will see if the events still pop up. If not, will remove in add/remove programs.
Thanks for your help

Assuming the errors stop, will award the points :)

I reckon that'd do it.  Make sure that you don't have anything else installed that you don't know about :-)
