to modify file on the server from the browser

Hi all,

I am developing a website using ASP.NET/C#. I would like to add the following function:

When a user clicks on a document link (.xls, .doc, etc), it automatically opens the file
for modification. When the user has finished modifying and saves, the modifed file
should automatically upload to the server, overwriting the old file.

I am looking for minimal user interaction (find a location to save/upload etc)
Any ideas on how to do this?

Thanks in advance,

Whether or not the file opens when thlink is click depends on whether the user has the correct applications installed, and whether the browser associations are set to recognize the.  Where is this file resides on the server, just how to yu intend to resolve simultaneous update by more than one user.  If it resides on the client then you have to resolve security issues and you will require activex to access the local file system.

As for the automatic upload.  The application doing the update may be able to do that.  A web page is certainly not going to do it without explicit enableing by the user; again a security issue.  As for what actually happens to the file on the server side; that is all dependent on the server side scripting.

If this is for a intranet application, it is probably possible to put the pieces together and get the user settings correct.  If it is for the Internet; lot's of luck.  You may get some users that will allow that kind of intrusive page; but there is not way that any user access through a corporate network is going to be allowed to run with security setting set to allow what you want to do.

This is for the internet and no share the file at all. Thank you for your
comment and do you have any examples to implement  this?
I implemented with user interaction module, i.e.
when you download you are required to set the path to save and
when you upload you need to find the file, however
i would like to save at predefined path and upload from the path
then the user does not worry about the location to save or upload.
do you have any idea ?
Thanks

That requires security bypasses that can only be done with activeX.  Activex controls are not my area of expertise.

To tell you the truth, that kind of thing will just get you site blocked by any corporate network with a concern for security;  it is far too agressive and dangerous to allow such things through the firewall.

BTW,

You will only get it to work for users with IE installed with low security setting.  The fact that IE will allow this and other such things is one of the reasons that CERT issued an alert about the dangers of IE and recommend users not use it on the Internet.
