Internet explorer will not open secure pages

Having removed all adware using spybot and ad aware Internet explorer will not open a secure page ie trying to buy a book on Amazon the page will not display. Anyone got any ideas to solve this problem.

Things to check:
* SSL 2 & 3 enabled (Options/Advanced/Security)
* Zone set to Internet (Options/Security)
* If using ZoneAlarm, make sure zone is set to Internet (or, if Trusted only, the sites are specified)
