terminal program detaching/backgrounding?

I just need to know how to detach from the terminal, I need to write a completely hidden background app with no output except the occasional error log. Maybe a popup window to notify the user, but that is all... please help!

You are describing a "daemon" or "service".  Here a couple of tutorials:
