By default you cannot. May be there is addon that can do it

Use MSN messenger plus and you can rename contact

how can MS be so stupid to not allow this ?

Yahoo does, and Trillian does....

As far as I have seen 6.2 or earlier version doesnot have..
MSN version 7 will be coming up soon and it may have.. not sure.. try to check 7 beta if you can get the setup file for it.

It isn't possible to change other people's names only your own 'friendly name', in order to do this you will need to either await a new release of MSN or install a 3rd party add-on e.g. MSN Messenger plus which gives you this feature.

yea MSN messenger Plus also gives you some other spiffy features including shortcuts to emoticons, blocking and unblocking a whole group etc.
