Printing log sheet for HP 5100DN and other HP laserjet Printers

Hi Everyone,

I am working in a construction consultant firm. We have hundreds of printing daily and my management want to control the false printing. Users print first and then they realize they print something wrong so they re-print all the documents. Need your expert advice on the following:

1- How can I keep a log for the HP printer LaserJet 5100DN. Its connected with the network but not with the Print Server or the Server. Its connected with a network point and configure an IP address in the printer.

2- How can I control the users to print faulty documents.

HP printers do not store a log of printing jobs. Other brands do, the best one to my knowledge being Xerox. Hence there are only 2 ways you can get a job log. The first is to connect all users to the printer via a server. However the server will not know how many pages there are in each job. The alternative way is to invest in some print monitoring software. Some of these packages will count pages in the print job. They tend to be expensive, and still require that all printing is done via the server. Some examples of print management software include:

As for stopping the users from printing incorrect documents, it may be possible to write a VB script IF you can come up with clear rules to let the script decide which job is valid and which is not. However, I suspect very much that you will be unable to come up with such rules.
