"Function address 0x.... caused access violation" when clicking printing preferences after downloading new hp drivers from windows update

During the weekend I downloaded the "hp printer software update released on August 22 2004." from Microsoft Windows Update on our W2K server. Since then all output on our HP Laserjet 2300 printer is printed as if the option the print 2 pages on 1 page is choosen. When we try to op en the Printing Preferences folder from the Printer properties we get a message from c:\windows\explorer.exe "Function address 0x.... caused a protection fault (code = 0xc0000005). Some or all property page(s) may not be displayed.

This printer is shared, and monday during the day this driver was spread to all Windows XP clients.

Does anybody have a soluton for this, other than deleting the updated driver and reinstalling the original driver on every single client.

The HP fix updates files Microsoft uses to communicate with HP printers. It doesn't replace the driver for your printer. or it will The fix looks at your system for HP device and replaces the files if it finds one and ignores the fix if a device isn't present. Once the MS update is in place the MS files are "marked" and MS will recognize the fix is in place and will not try to reupdate. What MS is touting as driver update is actually an update to the way it commnicates with a driver.

It may well be only the server requires the driver replacement due to the fact it uses the bi-directional communication and clients communicate with the server.

SO Reinstall the driver at the server, current or newer, and test the server for proper driver function. If the server functions test the clients. Delete and recreate the printer on failed clients and let the clients pull the driver from the server.

The problem is most likely due to the driver looking for the prefix MS files and feeding data hat the new files find corrupted. This should be a one time move( or until MS decides to fix something else)

THe same occurs for other drivers that MS uses

What are your client systems? NT based systems (NT 2K XP) will check the version on the server. After reinstalling the the Printer driver on the server check if the problem is resolved. If it persist remove the printer and reattach 2K server should send the driver.
9X clients will require more attention

This implies I have to go back to a previous version of the driver. And after that Windows Update offers to install the same update again. Isn't there a jump-forward solution? Installing some newer version of the drivers, so that Windows Update will not offer the update again.
