Outlook express doesn't view HTML

Under Tools > Options > Read:
If I choose to "Read all messages in plain text"  I get the paper clip with attachments for reading the text or html of the message, plus any attachments.  If I uncheck this box then the message hangs while (trying to render the html?) and never shows the message.  Installing SP2 did not fix this, so I am assuming it is a setting somewhere and not a corrupt file.  OE has been uninstalled and reinstalled (Manual deletion and reinstall).  The machine had considerable spyware but it has been removed.

Good try, but the problem was occuring before SP2 was installed.  SP2 was installed as an attempted solution.
With Sp2 now , have you tried to clear that option which I gave in  my first suggestion and did that help ..
Is IE in your machine working fine .. OE depends on IE for viewing all these html and if IE is corrupted then this may not work ..

Can you create your own html email , send it to yourself , receive it in inbox and see if that shows the same behavior

What happens if you do this
Tools -> Options... -> Read Tab -> Uncheck the box "Reading all messages in plain text".

close OE, open it again and then try viewing html

Post 1:  IE works fine, I can click the attachment for the HTML message and it displays fine. It will not preview or display properly if plain text is turned off.
Post 2:  If I uncheck the box it hangs while trying to render the HTML in the preview window.
Is your OE fully updated

you may want to create a new identity to check if the same issue occurs

MHT:// was disabled by some spyware prevention tools.  re-enabling it fixed the problem.
