Still have 'RPC Server Unavailable' message after applying previous solutions.

I am getting messages which tell me the spooler has had to stop. I read the previous topic about this and restarted the spooler in Control Panel/Administrative Tools etc., along with setting it and the RPC server to 'automatic'. I then restarted the machine and the spooler stopped again. i have tried it several times but get the same result each time. The message I get is this:
'Spooler Subsystem App has encountered a problem and needs to close etc.'
I recently installed Win XP Service Pack 2 and then uninstalled it because it screwed my network - could this have anything to do with it?
Win XP running on Dell Dimension 4500, Epson Stylus C44. The printer had been running fine for 2 years before this.
Different question: If I had installed SP2 on the Laptop, would the network have worked properly then?
