Hi ive just typed
Chkdsk /f/r
and this popped up:

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

i guess i click yes?
>> Chkdsk /f/r

u had to type Chkdsk /f /r F:
as ur external drive is F:
hit enter after typing say Yes if it ask u to run the scan on next reboot and check the results ??

im running getdataback for ntfs
i hope it works!!!

i didnt format this external hard drive so i dont need a data recovery company???

on getdataback for ntfs
please can yo explain how to use safely and without causing more damage?

what happened (i think) is the power cable for my external came out when i was doing something

will getdataback solve this?
im asking to use getdataback only to recover ur data,,,, coz it seems that ur hard drive needs a good formatting and before formatting i want to save ur data if it can be saved from this unaccessible hard drive !!

hi sheharyaarsaah

Yes i want to save my data if it can be accessed using getdataback for ntfs.

right now the program is
scanning drive
its on 7% - so far some errors have popped up and ive basically said yes to all.

omg im so hoping this will work

please explain sheharyaarsaah will the F drive be accessible using windows explorer once this getdataback has completed????

is this the plan please please help
getdataback will not correct the drive,,,, it will list the files present on ur hard drive,,,, it can copy those inaccessible files which u cannot access from explorer !!

after u get ur files from ur inaccessible hard drive, u are safe with formatting the hard drive or scanning it with a Diagnostic utility.... but first priority is to get the Data out of this drive !!

once this scan is done i cant view them in w.e.

but i can using there program and then i have to move the stuff i need to the c drive and then burn everything to cd that wont fit onto c drive once full and then format??

argh

so whats the plan when it finished scanning this external hd. its on 60% taking looong

do i save stuff onto cd ect. .?
Once it completes the scan of the harddrive it will open a window showing you in some way what files and folders it found. In this window you will select what files and folders you want to save and then tell the software where to save them to.

You need to have space available on another hard drive C: or anything besides the F:

The programs will copy the files from the damaged drive to the location you select.

Then you can back it up on a cd or where ever you like.

If you dont have enough space on C: to hold the entire contents of F: then you can use the program to recover a chunk of it to C: then burn it all to CD and erase the first chunk from C: then run the program again to copy another chunk from F: to C: and burn it to CD also. Just repreat this until you have everything from F: either backed up on CD or the C: drive then you can safely reformat F: and put the files from the C: drive and the CD's back on to F:.

I've the same problem.
Was moving files to my external hard drive, then my computer froze and I cancelled the transfer.
I remember clearly, the little rectangular box for the transfer progress status disappeared.
But my computer was still kind of laggy and some programs were not responding.
I couldn't restart my computer or anything, and I had to hold the power button for ten seconds.
After I turned my laptop back on, my external hard drive is not accessible and just the author of this article describes.

I'm curious, after everything the author had done, are you able to format your external hard drive??
