GUI does not start

Hi Guys
I was installing SMB protocol (samba) and a graphical user interface called swat to manage samba, everything was fine till i shutdown the pc yesterday.
Today I was starting my linux (rh9) kernel 2.4.20-8 the I found that it tries to bring up the graphical interface with no success.

well
I switched to the text mode, typed linux single , went on with the sequecnce till the text login appears when i try to type it dissappears again trying to start x server and so on. I had no success in logging
then when I started again I hit the spacebar key to enter linuxconf try to reconfigure when I typed redhat-config-xfree86 I got the following message

xconf.py fatal io error 2 (connection reset by peer) on x server

when I type X it gives me the following error
Fatal server error:

could not open default font 'fixed'
I can send you the whole log file if you want


any suggestions??

First off all, why do you need X running?
The swat aplication is a set of cgi-scripts that you access through a http-server, you don't need to do that from the local machine, it can be set up to accept connections from other machines as well.

That being said you want to know what is going on. I would say that your font server is not running. There should be a process xfs running on your machine:

ps -ax | grep [x]fs

if you don't get any output from that command do:

service xfs start

Oh, I just noticed:

you can't start x using X, use startx instead.

Ok I have started xfs then i typed X and starx aI always have the same output  fatal error not able to load default font or something like this
by the way this is the only pc I have and don't have another one to connect to webmin or SWAT  of course u can see i am not able to load graphical interface don't know why but swat was the last thing I did before shutting my pc

Ok, you definitely have a problem with the fontserver. I include the relevant lines from the logging output below:

The font server is either not running (check using ps -axf|grep [x]fs) or its configuration is not correct.

There are 2 solution paths:
1) fix the fontserver
2) change your X configuration not to use the font server, instead use local font paths.

I would first try to use localfont paths, especially since you are only configuring for one machine, the font server is more meant for multiple machines. So check the file /etc/X11/XF86Config. Locate the lines which contain a "fontpath" entry. Comment out the one that points to the fontserver ( unix:/7100 ), and uncomment any entries that point to local file paths. If there aren't any lines pointing to local paths let me know, then we first go looking for font directories :-)

I think we are on the road
first of all How can I fix the font server? by the way xfs service is running

then how can I open a file for edit in text mode ... typing its name as root is not the soloution I think... I have tried it
Sorry if my question seems silly but still I am not experienced enough

I was able to open this file for viewing in windows environment I found there were no lines pointing to other fonts.

Fix the font server. Ok,

first the line setting the font path should read:

FontPath  =  "unix/localhost:7100"

next if the fontserver is running there should be a socket at /tmp/.font-unix/fs7100 ( check with ls -l /tmp/.font-unix/ )
If the socket is not there then probably the font server gets started without stating the port properly. I personally do not run RH9, so if that is the case you should post the start script that is run for xfs, to enable searching the culprit.

BTW  I found  a similar bug-report on bugzilla for redhat: http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=130969

Perhaps that will fix your problems ?

Thanx very much for your sincere help
I typed df -h and I found that the x server doesn start as the  / partition is 100% full so I deleted some stuff and then I removed unnecessary applications
