Select the volume (single click), go to File>Get Info. Uncheck the "locked" checkbox.

By select volume I assume you mean the mac g-3 icon ? I did that, then get info then general info. I do not see a check box?
Then you must mean something other than "locked". What exactly is locked?
When trying to install logitech mouse ware error code 44 volume locked by hardware came up.
That's something else. "locked by hardware" sounds like you have a jumper set on the HD that makes it read only or something.
How weird! We have owned this mac for 3+ years , never had trouble installing software before and the case has not been opened to my knowledge. Any other possibility?????
This problem needs to be resolved, if there is any more info that I need to give I will try please help !!!!
Have you done any preventative maintenance on it in the last 3 years? Run Norton Disk Doctor, DiskWarrior, etc?
No

Norton Utilities ,that is on the original disc will also be able to sort this out for you.You can also try to stop and start the file sharing service.(in your control panels tab)
