OWA without front end server

Can I set up OWA on Exchange 2K3 without a front end server? I can access it on the LAN via host name/exchange and can get to the default website from the WAN via mail.mydomain.com which loads a simple HTML logon page but I can not figure out how to ge tthem logged on.... I have changed so many settings in IIS I am dizzy!!! Both server and exchange are 2003. can supply any additional info you may need.
