Cant Apply Changes to HP lj2100TN

Hi I have a Laser Jet 2100TN with 3 trays.  When I go to the printers properties I cant apply any changes I have made because the box is greyed out.

It is connected to a windows 2000 pro computer and logged on as administrator.

The apply button is permenantly greyed out.

I deleted all the printers and started with the HP online util that finds devices and there drivers.  Installed HPs driver and can print fine It just wont autodetect letter and legal pages.  And I cant set the trays because I cant click apply?  I gave full permissions to all users for that printer and still nothing.

Also this is a standalsone computer not on a domain.

thanks

I believe the LaserJet 2100 trays do not automatically detect the paper size; do you have the manual for this?
Indeed, found this in one of the HP forums:
The best way to make sure that the printer prints the right job from the right tray is to select the appropriate tray for each print job. In other words, if you are printing a job on legal size paper, be sure to specify Tray 3 in the driver. I would also suggest that if you print more often on letter size paper, place letter paper in Tray 3 and legal paper in Tray 2. That way, the letter paper will pull first when the printer is set to auto select.
Here is the manual in PDF format.
http://h200006.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/bpl06466/bpl06466.pdf
If I read the Media specs correctly, the media size is specified in the software config and aligns to tray #.
You can check current settings and properties for the printer by hitting the Go and Job Cancel simultaneously when the printer is in ready state.  If you have an EIO card installed as well, the second page will print those specs.
That PDF file includes troubleshooting processes as well.

Whenit was connected to an XP computer it would autodetect the type of paper needed.  The client prints mortgage reports that are legal and letter in the same report so the printer has to auto detect.

The problem Im having is not that I dont know how to setup it up but that I cant apply any changes Ive made.  The apply button is greyed out when you go into the printer properties via right click on the printer.
Just scanned through the manual.  It did mention that software settings will override printer settings.  However The software has been correctly setup...  I just cant understand why the apply button is greyed out?  weird
You've tried completely uninstalling the printer, all software and all related drivers, then getting updated drivers and software and reinstalling to no avail?
Is Windows 2000 current with service packs and patches?
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/

Although we don't have this printer, have had to contact HP on some printer issues and they've been quite responsive to Email queries.
Yes I removed and reinstalled the drivers.  and all software.  Ive dealt with hp in the past and had mixed results but that seems like my nex step.

oh and the windows 2000 is patched up to date.
I've now read the entire PDF file and also don't get how to resolve it other than to completely uninstall and reinstall all related elements; since if I understand you correctly, the software won't let you change the settings and within Windows 2000, I've found no related help at the Microsoft Knowledge Base, Technet or MSDN, nor in various google searches other than the info I posted from an HP forum that said autodetect doesn't apply to that model, lol.

Perplexing, to say the least.
Not sure if this will be of any help on folder permissions for W2K, but maybe something....
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/20392123/Windows-2000-Pro-Folder-Permissions.html?query=printer+apply+button+grey&topics=28
Found this from another Expert on this printer (though old); and says:
Have you checked the application software to make sure that the correct paper source is selected? Application setting override printer driver settings. Check the page setup from within the application.  If that is not the issue, then go to the workstations that use this printer and check to verify that the printer driver has the proper paper source selected. You do this on the paper tab of the printer driver properties.
So he's saying it's not just the Printer config and Printer software, but the application in use that'll be printing these reports.
You do this on the paper tab of the printer driver properties.

um yeah like I said, I have no problem stting up the printer.  I know how to do that.  Ive done it many times.  The problem is that I cant apply any printer properties.

Im not using jetadmin.  I have tried with the driver disk and using the util on the HP web site.   Same results.  Apply button is greyed out.
Yeah I appreciate your help.
Im going to have to harrass HP now.  Im searching there knowledge base which of course3 doesnt have what i need LOL
HP forum that said autodetect doesn't apply to that model, lol.

Which Forum?
Auto detect worked on the XP computer, but I can remember if Ive ever set it up on a 2000 computer.  Pretty sure I have though.
However this is all irrelevant until I can click apply ;-)

It seems more like a windows 2000 security issue.  I set permissions to all for everyone but it hasnt fixed the problem

this is a standalone computer no domain so it cant be a domain security issue.  Printer is plugged into the computer via parallel cable.

After you apply Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3), the Printing Security permissions that are listed for users in the Printer Properties dialog box may be incorrect or may be changed from the original settings before you applied SP3. Users can still print and manage documents with the correct permissions that were assigned to individual users, but the list of permissions is incorrect.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330164  (was supposedly fixed in SP4)
Access Violation in Windows Explorer When You View Printer Properties in Active Directory

I suppose you've checked any Event Log entries and no clues?

Out of ideas, off to cook for real now.  lol.

thanks for the help.
Im going to double check that it has sp4 on it.  Nothing in the logs

ill post any conclusion.  there will be one!!
Drat!  Maybe you'll be luckier than I was by going through our Printers and HP Printer Topic areas.  I did some of that last night in queries, but swamped today.  ;)
Have you checked into a possible firmware update, if needed?

I have tried everything to get my LJ2100TN to auto select the correct page, legal or letter as the case may be without success. I have set and reset all software switches to auto select and it still does nbot work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Tee Hee, think it was EE (though partial, lol).

What an adventure, no?  Learned a lot, never used the printer, but feel it's a win/win scenario if in the end things work.

I'd love to hear the outcome.
Its a great little printer. Powerhouse for the size and cost.   Ive used them often.  However not with the third tray which requires a different driver. (slamming head)
I suspect that I may convince the client to go to XP Pro.  But before I do that.  Im going to format and reinstall Win2000 then setup the printer.  Just to see if winblows 2000 was weirding out after being in operation for a couple years without a format.
I want to see if its this computer or Win2K in general.  So Ill know the next time.  Then Ill put him on XP and definately wont have a problem, I set up the same printer on an XP machine 2 weeks ago before they had to move it and hence the new win2k problem.

dont worry Ill post the results.  Nothing I hate worse then googling a problem and seeing the exact problem in the SERP and then going to an unclosed topic.  Just left hanging.  Drives me crazy!!

thanks for all the help though.

What is your experience with the HP forum?  Quick responses?  Im spoiled by EE.  I get annoyed if someone hasnt responded within a few hours like they do here  ;-)

Not nearly as responsive as EE; but do respond.  I've not dealt with your printer and left W2K long ago, so memory wanes (and I'm getting old, lol).

Needless to say, if you reformat W2k to test, you'll have the joy of all the downloads and updates and some updates change settings, etc.

The adventure goes on, no?

We upgraded to XP SP2 and love it; though many hate it given all the new things to learn and the prereqs to ensure compatibility and usage of all the added function.

But then, like all things in our dynamic environments .... the more homework up front, the less headaches on the back end (so to speak).

":0)  Will stay tuned.  You and I have something in common; we're troopers and get things done.  Sometimes not as quickly as we like, but tenacious nonetheless, that's clear.

Just an Update.
I formated his computer and installed XP Pro.

SAME PROBLEM.

So I think its the printer.  Using the PCL5e driver I can at least change trays, but it still wont print the forms correctly because it wont switch between trays anymore.

thanks for the help.
If he ever gets it serviced I'll let you know what it was.
Thank you.  A number of the links I provided above had interfaces to "contact HP tech support" and didn't appear to have cost-related requirements; would surely escalte this issue if the problem persists.

Very much want to help you work through this if more is needed.
