The hosts file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Hi Experts,

Can u tell u why the host file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc need to add a row of IP and url in order to visit certain sites.

If i don't add that row, i won't be able to go to the site.

Hello Ricjava,

The hosts file is needed when the DNS is not working or the DNS name you put in your browser does not resolve. For example, if for some reason you type http://somefictioussite.com , and your system does not know how to resolve the domain somefictioussite.com to a numeric ip address (due to DNS issues etc), then if you had an entry in the hosts file for the domain somefictioussite.com , the computer / browser would be able to resolve the name to ip and you would be able to browse the site. For a detailed explanation, look at the following url:

Hope that answered your question!

Thanks and Good Luck!
