A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients.

I am having difficulty sending email to a single recipient in another, completely separate domain.  The emails always bounce back 24 hours later with the error " A configuration error in the e-mail system caused the message to bounce between two servers or to be forwarded between two recipients.... 5.4.6 SMTP; 554 5.4.6 Too many hops.  Email to other users in the same domain are delivered fine....

Thanks in advance for your help.

If other users on the same domain can be emailed without any problems then you need to speak to the administrators of the remote domain - it is probably a problem at their end. The recipient has probably got a rule to auto forward the message to another account, which is either full or has a rule on it to send back to the original account - causing an email loop. You have seen a prime example of why I don't allow automatic forwarding for any users on email servers I administrate.

Thanks.  I've contacted their administrator and am waiting to hear back.  They're in Australia so time zones may delay things a bit.  Will let you know as soon as I learn anything.  And yes, it makes good sense to disallow automatic forwarding, especially if you have large number of users!

Well, I never heard back from the admin so will close the case.  Again, thanks for the assistance.
