    Tell us more; are you a site Administrator or one responsible for network/users and trying to create customized IE options?  Don't fully understand; but to store this and access it is a HUGE security issue, no?

    If it's about being the Administrator rolling out customized versions of IE, you might want to explore IEAK, more about that and updates here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ieak/evaluation/features/default.mspx
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ieak/default.mspx

    Please expound further so we can understand your goal and environment.

    Hi,

    thanks for the quick responses. Before I look into your suggestions, let me explain exactly what I am trying to do (and why; sorry for not having explained properly upfront).

    We have nagios (www.nagios.org) set up as monitoring tool.
    A browser interface allows to check the status of different network services both visually and through playing warn sounds.
    The browser window is refreshed every 30 sec or so, so there is a  pretty good overview of what`s up and what problems exist.

    A few maintenance tasks (e.g. adding a new machine to the monitored computers) require a restart of the nagios service.
    When the browser refresh is done while nagios is restarted, the browser will display an error (and won`t refresh any more), so the browser interface is completely useless until the user logs in again...

    So my idea is as follows:
    - the computer where the browser interface is running is dedicated to only running the browser interface, so I can do pretty much what I want to do
    - every 15 min I am killing all iexplore.exe processes
    - after that iexplore.exe is started again, with the proper url

    but ...

    I am asked for a password. Nagios/Apache are using basic http authentication, so I don`t think that I can pass user name & password in the url (please correct me if I am wrong).

    Any ideas ? (maybe try a different browser...)

    oh, it`s not a security issue - the nagios site is only avaliable internally and will only allow to look at things, not to modify them

    Did you mean http://user:pw@domain.com? I think it sholud work with IE and Apache
    If you are getting an Error, you may have installed a IE patch.

    Start the registry-editor (start-->run and type in regedit)
    Go (and create) to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_HTTP_USERNAME_PASSWORD_DISABLE and create a new DWORD-Value
    -> name: iexplore.exe
    -> Value: 0

    Thank you for finalizing this.  Can you please give us an update on this in terms of the results?  It is always appreciated and standard request per our Guidelines to add comments if the grade is a "C", our lowest here.  If we can do more to help you achieve better results than given here, your feedback would also be integral.

    Hi,

    first of all - thank you very much for your time & help (astaec, caterham_www and basically everyone out there on experts-exchange.com). I split the points & graded "C" because neither suggestion helped.

    Yet, I don't have a solution now, so maybe it's just not possible. In that case, I should have rather given a "B" grade, I think.

    I just cleaned up my experts-exchange account and didn't think much about the grades.

    Cheers

    Cheers, and thank you for your input.  Sorry we couldn't help you achieve your goal; and with all the concerns in terms of intrusions and security .... you can imagine the need to control that type of access.  Too often the fact that "it can't be done" and reasons posted don't make our lives easier, but still the way that it is.  The consideration about grades here are noted above.  Some experts look at grading history before they bother to post, which isn't my situations, but may be something else to consider when grading experts on their assistance, in general.

    Best wishes to you, Holsche.
