IE and other programs open, then instantly close.

When trying to run IE or other various programs on a clients machine it will attempt to load, and then instantly close. SFC does this, Outlook does this, and various other programs. Windows Explorer also will not open.

What's odd, is that I can load Regedit, msconfig, HijackThis, AdAware, etc. I've noticed the process dwwin.exe loads and then closes whenever these are trying to run.

Also, nothing will run even in Safe mode. I get the error

svchost.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x7c80ac9b" referenced memory at "0x80040119". The memory could not be "read".

on startup.

There were viruses, but as far as I know they are now gone. (One was the virus that creates scvhost.exe)

I'm at a loss, because I've got EVERYTHING shutdown with the exeption of the essential processes. Why does dwwin.exe load with IE and various other stuff, but not everything?

Also, if I go to Start->run and spend any time typing something explorer will shutdown and then reload. If I type whatever I'm trying to run quickly then I can load it. Explorer still will shutdown in the background and reload, but whatever I opened (msconfig, in this case) stays open.

I'm trying to avoid a repair install. Not a huge deal if it is needed, but I hate having to do it. I prefer to be able to fix it without measures such as that. ;)

What is the key
LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg ? It looks like it's the place MSCONFIG stores all the keys that you make not load. I could be wrong tho.
:)

Well, RAM was fine. Couldn't figure out why it was doing it, so I did a repair install. I hate having to do that, although it now works, it feels as if I failed.

Ah well. Thanks for the help.
