Search crashes explorer
When I try to search for certain terms, explorer crashes and generates a log. Some search terms always crash, some occasionally crash, and some do not crash. Where do I find the log file, and what should I look for in said file? I have tried replacing explorer.exe. I've done all the virus and adware checks, so I doubt it's one of those.

Hi snoyes_jw,
Are you talking about windows explorer ?
Make sure you are not running any applications when you are doing search .
Did this start after you installed any new application . If yes , then uninstall that application to see if that would help .
Make sure to go to windows update page and update all the latest updates for windows 2000 and I guess you already have Sp4 otherwise , install it .
Inorder to find log , go to start --> run --> eventvwr.msc
locate errors under application and system logs.
post if you find anything wrong.

Check this
Error Message When You Start Windows Explorer: Explorer.exe Has Generated Errors and Will Be Closed by Windows

Try repairing IE to see if that would help
Also run going to start --> run --> chkdsk /r

Thanks for your help, folks.
I tried all suggestions. The only change was that after running checkdisk, the error changed to a "Instruction referenced memory, could not be written" type error (I have the hex codes if it will be helpful).
That last link from sunray describes the situation exactly. However, IE does not appear on the program list under Add/Remove programs. (IE6 is installed). How can I repair/replace IE6?

I followed the Microsoft directions...uninstalled SP4, rolled back to IE5. No help. I'll try reinstalling and running the above suggestions. Stay tuned...
listening..... :)
After rolling back to IE5 , do you still having issues..
you need not do the above suggestions if you donot have issues in IE 5

Yes, same problem occurs in safemode. I have disabled 3rd party browser extensions.
This computer had 98, was scrubbed and formatted to NTFS and installed 2000 last week. All applications and updates were installed before anybody tried a search, so if it's a conflict, it could be most anything.
I'll try a new profile tonight.

You guys are brilliant! I logged in as Administrator to copy the profile. As Administrator, there is no error. I created a new profile and logged in there. No error!
Sunray gets the bulk of the points for that comment led me to a solution. Sheharyaar gets some points too, since I learned some good stuff in the process.

restart and now check for the problem ??
If this doesn't happen then may the cause is a bad or corrupted BHO, use BHODemon to trace out the promlematic BHO >> http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/17/10-17-71.shtml
