Linux in test mode

My linux install comes up with the gui, but running kudzu messes up the genome.  How do i get linux into text mode?

    Accepted Solution


        Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or F2, F3, F4) to get a terminal login prompt (text mode). Then login as root.
    Edit /etc/inittab file and change "default:5:..." to "default:3:...) (runlevel 3 is text mode)
    It will reboot to text mode by default.
