Software Update Service

Is causing me some very big headaches!

Here is our set up... SBS2003 with about 50 computers half and half 2000 & XP.  None of which have XP SP2.  I have gone through a lot of the postings aswell as SUSserver.com.  ran almost every application they have there to test the sus with no luck.  Everything is configured with the group policy editor.  All clients are receiving their GPs from testing with gpresult (on XP machines...) I've got in my GP to autoupdate at 5pm every day. my server name is using the full DNS http://servername.domain.local.  I want to beleive that my SUS server is responding to requests because when you run MBSA on the server to scan another computer it doesn't complain about not finding the server.  This is extermly frustrating, if any one needs any more information I'd be more than happy to give it to you.

p.s. and trust me if I could give more than 500 points to help get this fixed I would!

Heres a step-by-step guide to help you in setup the SUS Server:

1. Install SUS on the server.
2. Disable any Firewall like software on any client (disabled by default).
3. Go to the server and to the directory services and do the following:
   3.1. Open mmc (Start => Run... => type 'mmc' and press 'Enter').
   3.2. Click 'Console' => 'Add/Remove Snap-in...' => 'Add...' => Choose 'Active Directory Users and Computers' => Click 'Add' => Click 'Close' => 'OK'.
   3.3. Expand 'Active Diretory Users and Computers' => Right-Click '<Yur Domain>' => Choose 'Properties' => Choose 'Group Policy' tab and click 'Edit' to the 'Default Domain Policy'.
   3.4. Right-Click 'Administrative Templates' under 'Computer Configuration' => and choose 'Add/Remove Template' => Choose 'wuau' template and click 'Add...'.
4. Configure System Upddate Services (SUS):
   4.1. Expand 'Administrative Templates' under 'Computer Configuration'.
   4.2. Expend ' Windows Components'.
   4.3. Select 'Windows Update' where you will have Four elements on the right pane.
   4.4. Bouble click on the 'Configure Automatic Updates' => Choose 'Enabled' => Choose option 4 (Auto Download and schedule the installation) => Choose what time do you want clints to be updated => Click 'OK' to close the window.
   4.5. Double-Click 'Specify intranet Microsoft update service location Properties' => Choose 'Enabled' and type on both Text Boxes 'http://<Server NetBIOS name>'. Note: It is important to use the 'http://' prefix. Click 'OK' to close the window.
   4.6. The other two options are at your will...
5. Updates policy will be updated through all your clients.
6. Configuring the Server:
   6.1. Open IE from any client and type '<Your Server's IP address>/susadmin' and press 'Enter'.
   6.2. Enetr Administrator User name and Passwod.
   6.3. Go to the 'Syncronizing Server' section and fill in syncronization scheduler (The best time is the time with the less activity as possible).
   6.4. Go to 'Set Options' and fill in the following data: The Name of the Server (NetBIOS Name), The language options and leave all othe default settings un-touched.
   6.5. Go to the 'Approve Updates' section to approve all updates section.

Note:
All Active Directory policy will update all 2000/XP clients. But before that; please verify that all clients are using the propper OS version, otherwise you may need to install the client according to the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/susclient/default.asp

See, the common mistake is putting the 'http://' prefix on the Server's side.

Good luck

thanks, but thats already been done.  It was working just peachy keen on sbs2000 but when from what i can tell after the migration to sbs2003 it don't work.  I do have the "microsoft firewall client" installed, but disabled could it be something on the ISA server that might be blocking it?
 I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling...kicking it, everything.  Its really frustrating when you can use MBSA from a client computer, specify the sus server (internally) and scan the computers.

Well it's obvious that your client isn't configured to Update from your SUS Server, as you can see, the log specifies that the download where taken from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/iuident.cab.

I'd check, or double check my Domain GPOs and make sure they are top notch!  (Check for inheritance problems also ex. if another GP overides your settings)

OK

Try to update the following file (as a registry updater) to a single workstation and see how it works:
The content of the file is as follows:
1. Copy the reg enteries without the '*****' and without the '()' and fill in the propper IP address in "http://<SUS IP Address>":
*************************Start of reg file*****************************
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
"WUServer"="http://<SUS IP Address>"
"WUStatusServer"="http://<SUS IP Address>"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
"NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000001
"UseWUServer"=dword:00000001
"RescheduleWaitTime"=dword:0000001e
"NoAutoUpdate"=dword:00000000
"AUOptions"=dword:00000004 (it has to be '4')
"ScheduledInstallDay"=dword:00000000
"ScheduledInstallTime"=dword:0000000f (Set the time)
*************************End Reg File*******************************

2. Create a *.reg file and insert the data.
3. Click on the file and install the update.

Also, I need more details as for how your LAN is configured:
|SUS Server|<===>|ISA Server|<====>|LAN|?

By that, are you talking about HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Windows Update?

If so, I think these are the LOCAL settings, and not those implemented by the domain GPs

Oh and btw, when you're talking about GP, you ARE talking about Domain GPs right, not using gpedit.msc?

Cyber,
well with wonderful ms and there ways.  SUS server is on the box as the ISA, along with SQL, IIS, etc... so i guess in essensce its...   |SUS Server|ISA Server|<====>|LAN|? or |ISA Server|SUS Server|<====>|LAN|

Steph,
yep domian gps all the way. yes it was in that key.  why would there be 2 different registry setting both that contain AUSTATE option?  Are they going to cancel each other out?  Is that the LOCAL settings you were talking about?

is the easiest way to test these new setting cyber, is just by stopping and starting the service? or will i have to wait until the scheduled time?

Go look in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate as Cyber said earlier.  This is where the Windows Update GP actually modifies the registry.

You see, Microsoft' GPs never modifies the registry keys, it only overides them with another one. (I'm not being clear now, am I?)
Lets take WU as an example :  The Domain GP is going to write into HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate, that would be the Domain's settings

As for Gpedit.msc (which would be local settings), they modifiy directly into HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Windows Update

If WUServer is specified in BOTH these keys.  Domain settings will win over local.

Therefore, if HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate specify to use http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/, you're screwed! ;)

Now that this is clear, the easiest way to test your settings, are not only to restart your server, but also delete the registry key that specifies when your WU should launch again, and also reseting the AUState.

To do that, set "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\AUState" to 2 and delete HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\LastWaitTimeout
When this is done, Restart the Automatic Update service.

Do Enter IP addresses (The SUS IP Address). This is due to the fact that if you may suffer DNS problems, you wont suffer SUS updates. Also, you didnt answer my question. How does the SUS server is attached to your LAN?

Dont forget the 'http://' prefix. Otherwise the SUS clients wont be able to access the SUS.

Cyber, k i changed it in the domain policy to http://<its localip>

the susserver is on the only server here on the LAN, one of the fall back of having SBS 2003, so all modules that come with premium addition sbs gets installed, exchange, sql, iis, isa, etc.   does that answer your question?

I Must admit that everything looks fine here... It does point out to your SUS server, and the State is good...
(AUState value 2 = Detect Pending, AuOption Value 4 = Auto Download/Auto Install)

The only thing that worries me right now would be the "UnableToDetectTime"="2004-10-26 20:27:12" key...  I did some research and couldn't find what it exactly means...  Out of my head, I'd say this is the last time the Update Detection started, and failed (Which would be yesterday, 10pm, therefore making sense..)

Anyway... We now know your client configs are good... but it seems like your clients can't quite connect to the server...  Did you check out your IIS Permissions?  (Not sure if WU uses anonymous logon)

Getting a little desperate here, but still managed to find some information... I've read on a forum that
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update]
"SusServerVersion" = REG_DWORD: 0x00000001 (1)

Means you are using SUS Server, and in your earlier posts, I did not see that key, so could you create it and test it out again?
Btw... Your log specify that the client is trying to connect to http://172.31.1.4 ... is that your server's ip?

This is weird though.. as you are saying that your clients are able to connect to your SUS server (You could try to telnet on your server through the port 80 to be sure)  So I'd take a look at your permissions, both in you IIS, and on your server.

Permissions should be like this :

In IIS, make sure on SUS SERVER,
You have ANONYMOUS ACCESS on Default Website
   \Default Web Site
   \selfupdate
   \autoupdate
   \content

C:\SUS\Content Everyone should at least have READ Permission
Web Anonymous User, IUSR & IWAM Users may have READ & EXECUTE, LIST FOLDER CONTENTS & READ Permission

Error 80190191 is an HTTP error '401 Unauthorized'. Your IIS server is requiring your client computer to authenticate, when, in fact, it should be allowing anonymous access. Check that the SUS site has anonymous access enabled and that the NTFS permissions are not preventing the 'IUSR_machinename' account from reading the contents of the SUS site.

Just a thought;
If thing wont turn out for the best here; I want you to try SUS ForceUpdater. Its free and it will overcome some of the problems the Windows Updater clients suffer:
http://www.nextwish.org/geek.php?page=susutil

It has usage instructions as well...

Its looking like there might be a problem with IIS, it keeps giving me the 401 error, everything is set up for anonoymous access, but it still won't let it through.  Is there a way to change the user name that auto updating services logs onto with?  I tried but it complains when starting it that there is another process that needs to get changed but I'm not sure what it is.  I'll post the updated windows update.log tomorrow,  On a sadder note, i booted up a windows 2000 machine thats been off for a while (to play with) and it is giving errors in the windows update.log about issue connecting to the microsoft update server...I can post that one aswell, but i didn't have time to check the registry settings....

I know its a bit trouble, but try to reinstall the IIS and SUS on the server along with all correct permissions; that might help.

Reinstalling SUS with default settings could indeed solve some problem, as it's going to set required permissions again.  If you want to double check manually, You'll need to check
- IIS (Which you already did)
- The SUS Directory ( %SomePath%\SUS\ )

Over the weekend I attempted to reinstall it, thinking that might have been my issue orginally.  But i was right back to where i was...boy is this annoying.  What about setting up a new website in IIS, moving everything to that one, would that work?

stu

StGoYCommented:
By reinstalling, you do mean uninstall first, then Install back again right?
If so, the website should delete itself when uninstalling so it shouldnt be a problem...  And installation creates it also with default permissions, which should be fine!

Man I'm getting out of ressources here...  Last thing that would need to be checked would be the firewall... but then again, SUS connects through the port 80, which I'd doubt is blocked...

Could you try to telnet your server, or use netcps to test that port connection?

Sadly... It's the only thing I can think of for now...
