How can I reset the administrator's password if I forgot it?

Here are 4 of these free tools:
    1. Petter Nordahl-Hagen's Offline NT Password & Registry Editor
    2. Openwall's John the Ripper
    3. EBCD – Emergency Boot CD
    4. Austrumi

ERD emergancy disk is free to download and use sorry i didn't say that above.

This is an Emergency Download version. This is not a site license. It is a single seat license.
If you need to use ERD 2003 on multiple machines permanently, please contact sales@winternals.com to inquire about other licensing options.
At the time of purchase you will receive two emails: one containing a 5-day unrestricted key, and another containing a download link and instructions on how to register your license permanently.
Use the five-day unrestricted key for your emergency situation as it will allow you to install ERD2003 on a working machine in order to make bootable media for your non-working machine. (Third-party CD burning software that has the capability of making bootable media, such as Nero or Roxio, must be installed on the working system.)
This version of ERD does not include Disk Commander.
After your five-day key expires, you will need to register your single seat license permanently for a single machine.

You just use the locksmith after you boot from the cd and it prompts for what pw you want to change your admin pw to, put it in and confirm it, then hit ok. after that you shutdown take out the cd , reboot and your set. fast and easy.

Did you loose or forget your password? Can you boot the server up to the login prompt?? Do you have another user with admin rights?

Try this. Login in as another user with admin rights. Type su. Prompt will now change to root. Now type passwd root. Let us know if it worked.

What version of Linux are you using on the server??

You need to boot the server into single mode. Instructions here:
    http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/custom-guide/s1-rescuemode-booting-single.html

Once the system is booted, use the passwd command by typing:
    /usr/bin/passwd

Ok. You can delete the line for the root user in /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow.
    DO NOT DELETE EVERYTHING!!

    OK.Download demo

Demo version is available for download free of charge. Demo version will allow you to reset a 'demo' password only. This demo version will make no changes for all other passwords.
    http://www.lostpassword.com/demos/winkeyd.exe

Windows XP/2000/NT Key resets Windows XP/2000/NT security settings if Administrator password, secure boot password or key disk is lost.

This application helps to create a floppy driver disk. Reboot locked system using Windows XP/2000/NT CD-ROM or setup disks and load Windows Key from the floppy (as an additional driver). After Windows Setup loads all required files Windows Key starts and shows you the list of Windows installations to be unlocked.

Windows XP/2000/NT Key demo version resets administrator password only if it is set to [Demo12345].
Visit http://www.LostPassword.com/ to purchase fully functional version.

You will need a boot disk that not only have a program to reset the password, but also has the SCSI drivers for your machine so it can read your hard drive. Follow the instructions on this page to make such a disk. It will show you how to add you SCSI drivers to Offline NT Password Recovery program.

I understand, you would need to add your own drivers to the boot disk.

ALternatively, there are other packages like this one...
    http://www.lostpassword.com/windows-faq.htm
    passware password recovery kit
The FAQ explains how to load your own SCSI drivers as well. It loads third party mass storage (SCSI, RAID, etc.) drivers when using Windows XP, 2000 or NT 4.0 setup disks

I think you're missing something here. These disks don't have your SCSI drivers on them already....YOU need to provide them.

    Hello kcarim

the article and links you have mentioned, if i put this(.exe) in a floppy and when reading driver stage comes will this work, because i am not installing i can only put this in a floppy, because i don't any admin account to install this.

I will boot using linux boot disk it will ask for driver detection option then i should or i will provide a floppy loaded with this driver.

I hope i am clear in explaining my problem.

The above link provided is an exe, will this be read through floppy.??

Use another computer to extract the files from exe file. You will have three (3) directories. Netware, Ultra 160, and Win2000.
    Copy Win2000 to floppy.

    Boot your computer.
On the bottom of the screen, you will see a message "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver...".  Press F6 when you see this message.

A message will appear after a short time, prompting you to install your driver.  Press "S" to specify a driver.

Insert the Adaptec Windows 2000 driver disk into your floppy drive and press enter.

You will be presented with five choices (you may have to scroll down to see them all):

Adaptec 19160 Ultra160 PCI SCSI Controller
Adaptec 2930U2 Ultra2 PCI SCSI Controller
Adaptec Ultra160 Family PCI SCSI Controller
Adaptec Ultra2 Family PCI SCSI Controller
Adaptec Ultra Family PCI SCSI Controller

Highlight the option that best fits your adapter, and press enter. (Adaptec Ultra160 Family PCI SCSI Controller).

    Please reply.

    Hi kcarrim
i am trying to it is not detecting, as i am using linux boot disk method, i think we need fujitsu hard disk driver MAN3367MP.

We are using linux boot disk following steps
    (1) Please select partition by number or
a = show all partitions, d = load new disk drivers
    l = relist NTFS/FAT partitions, q = quit
    Select: [1] d (selected)
    (2)
    Select: [1] d
==== DISK DRIVER / SCSI DRIVER select ====
You may now insert or swap to the SCSI-drivers floppy
    Press enter when done:
    Found 1 floppy drives
Found only one floppy, using it..
    Selected floppy #0
    Mounting it..
    Floppy selection done..
SCSI-drivers found on floppy: (IT will stop here)
(Here we are failing, it is not detecting , http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/)
here there are certain drivers downloaded with this boot disk loaded in a separete floppy.)

If i am not wrong i need fujitsu hard disk driver MAN3367MP right??

We are having win2000 adv server with NTFS partiton.

You did not manage to reset admin password?? Try to reset it before installing SCSI driver.

""SCSI-drivers found on floppy: (IT will stop here)""
I could only find driver for MAN3367MP Solaris, not Windows2000. You need only SCSI driver.

You will need Windows 2000 setup CD-ROM or floppies in order to run the software. Run Windows XP/2000/NT Key installation program and follow the on-screen instructions to create the driver disk. When the driver disk is ready, reboot the locked computer with setup CD-ROM or floppies and press F6 to load additional drivers as soon as the blue screen appears, continue to the second floppy, press 'S' and load Windows XP/2000/NT Key driver when the program prompts to specify additional drivers. Now add SCSI driver. Providing the disk you have downloaded and extracted from(ftp://ftp.cc.ntut.edu.tw/Vendors/MSI/driver/download/scsi/adaptec7899.exe).

This method should work as well.

Use the boot disk you have downloaded from http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

You posted """here there are certain drivers downloaded with this boot disk loaded in a separete floppy"""
    http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/sc041205.zip

Extract these files to a second floppy : AIC79xx.ko.gz and AIC7xxx.ko.gz
This is now your SCSI driver disk!!
