Filtering out HTML tags before emailing...

I have an email page that let's the user type into an HTML editor box instead of the regular textarea and it will write the underlying HTML and save it to a database.  The problem is that some people don't accept HTML emails and when the email is sent to them all the HTML tags show up along with the text.  Is there a good way to trim out all the HTML before I send the email?  I tried to use the  Replace() function but couldn't get it to work correctly.  Thanks for any help!
