Sending a FAX Using a Cell Phone

I'm trying to send a FAX using a GSM cell phone. My laptop PC dials the correct number, as shown on the cell phone display. But, the call does not go through; the FAX, or any other number being called, never answers. Are there any codes that I need to add as prefixes to the phone number? I am able to make voice calls using the PC to dial the phone.  I have the cell phone connected to my PC using a USB cable. My OS is Windows XP. The cell phone modem - Motorola T720 - is working and responds properly to diagnostic commands. I have talked to Cellular One and Motorola for hours on this subject - each blames the other.

I'm using Windows XP FAX console version 5.1. I looked at the link: http://navasgrp.home.att.net/tech/cingular/fax.htm
Although the FAX SW could be the issue, my PC and cell phone seem to be responding properly. I also downloaded the Cingular connection manager and tried to use it to make a data call to my dial up service. Again, the PC appears to dial the cell phone correctly but the Cingular network never responds to the call.

Well, I installed Symntec WinFax Pro, and got the same results as with the windows FAX console. Neither application appears to dial the cell phone correctly. When dialing a phone number that is in the cell phone's memory, the cell phone properly relates the number to the name. There is no audio tone, such as dialing tones, emitted from the phone during the attempted connection.

I downloaded the Connection Manager application from the Cingular website. Using this application, I can connect to my dial-up internet service. I can also call my home phone. When I pick up the receiver, it sounds like a modem on the other end, i.e. the Cingular system has connected to a modem. Based upon this, i don't think the problem is with my cell phone carrier.

There must be some code sequence that is necessary to properly initialize the cell phone for making data calls.

did you call Cingular according to sources you would have to pay for this functionality

I tried true fax with my PPC Phone and it doesnt work because you have to pay cingular as a service.

I am paying Cingular for the service. That is why my data calls to my dia-up service are working.

I used a program to capture the commands going to the cell phone modem. The Win FAX application (doesn't work) definately uses different set-up and dialing commands, compared to the Cingular Connection Manager (does work). Win FAX has a set-up page for properly configuring the modem. I've sent in a trouble request to Symantec - hopefully they can provide the correct set-up commands.

I've spent dozens of hours talking to Cingular about this. They say, since it's a Motorola phone, I have to talk to Motorloa. Motorola says, since it's Cingular's service, I have to talk to Cingular.

But, I'll try again.

I spent an hour on the phone with Win FAX Pro techncial support. After trying all available options, the support agent concluded that WinFAX Pro version 10.03 (the latest) does not support my cell phone modem. So unless someone has another option, I think this question is closed. Neither Windows FAX console nor Win FAX supports sending a FAX using the Cingular/Motorola T720.

After further analysis, using Hyper Terminal to operate my cell phone as a modem, the problem seems to be the Cingular system. Using the TIA/EIA-78-B standard for controlling modems, if I set FCLASS=0 (0 = data, 1 = FAX) and dial a number, the call goes though OK as a data call. If I set FCLASS=1, the Cingular system does not answer. So, it looks like I'm back to Cingular.

The problem may not be exclusive to Cingular. I tried a Motorola phone, model T730, on the AT&T system. It didn't work in either data or FAX mode.

I have finally resolved this issue. It was Cingular's problem, probably a software problem. Now, I can send a FAX using my cell phone.
