If I use a cable convertor to convert USB port to a serial port, will the usb modem plugged in appear as serial modem or usb modem?

I tried to use Knoppix 3.2 to connect to Internet on my Toshiba Satellite 2800 laptop. When using KPPP to cfg my modem, I had tried /dev/ttyS0 to S3, but the msg when I queried the modem was always: modem is busy.<br />

Any idea? should I change some modem commands?<br />
