Unanswered question list and ping feedback and bugs...
I'm working on generating a list of questions that appear to still require answers for all the areas I'm PE for. I'm also running a response reminder ping in those areas on 5-7 day old questions.

nice quick reply ;-)
I'm not too sure how I'd phrase it, but it implied that the question was old when in fact it is new. maybe...

Hi Turn,
This question is irrelevent to me now though it will pop up again I'm sure. I trawled back through posts dating back to 2002 and again no-one had a specific answer to my problem and it seems fairly common.
Probably worth putting in the list as unsolved.
I will post a "please delete" for it
Thanks heaps.
PS: You guys at EE do a great job. Hats off :-)

A little quick. Less than 2 days since my comment and only 3 days since the question was asked.

Regarding question

I have found that the comment left was not helpful to me and I have found the answer for it myself. Should I post the answer as a comment to my own question or should I ask for question to be deleted? Thanks in advance!

I agree, post the answer and get community support to PAQ it so it can help others. I guess a points refund would be OK too.

turn123,
Why dont you post your reminder ping as an administrative comment? For the newbies here at Experts Exchange this reminder might not look very seriuous. They will think that it is just another comment but if it will be highlighted in the Administrative Orange then they might give it much more weightage..... and secondly as many people have posted it earlier that 2 day's non-activity is not a good time to ping.... Perhaps changing it to 5 days is a better option.......

Imran,
I don't leave admin comments unless I've read the question before posting :-). Personal preference. I will consider doing so if the ping is running later then two days.
I've asked if it's alright to pull it back a few days.

So what are we suppose to do when we post a question and are not getting a solution to the problem. I don't want to hand points out for something I already know isn't working ... at the same time having people tell me there is no work around doesn't prove that there isn't one out there.
I've had a few questions like this and the two I have open currently seem to be falling into this trap.

Why don't you generate a script that will search out the "OLD" questions, and email the author to come back to either select an answer or give us an update to the originating issue? Just a thought. I like hanging out in the EE, and I like to see if the resolutions posted actually worked, or if the auther found a way around his/her issue.
I have a topic that was never resolved. Do I accept any answer and close the topic anywys? Or do I just leave it open indefinetly, until someone anwers it properly?

Luc,
That was deliberate as I made a few small changes and was using the Applications list to test them (Largest list most chance to catch anything I broke) :-). The Apps list should be the only one with the most recent update.
I'm manually running it in the morning (or afternoon today [EST]) whenever I get around to it which was rather late for me as I was busy with other things today.
Thanks for bringing it to my attention though :-)

Just had two mails from two different questions that were only asked late last week - Maybe there ought to be at least a couple of weeks cooling off period before bunging a reminder in?
I think the people who asked the questions are trying the various suggestions and a 'hurry up' may not be always appropriate.
Apologies for not reading this thread above so I have probably have repeated some views - that's my vote anyway.

I can understand why you are saying this, But i dont agree, not completely at least.
First thing you gotta remember is, that the various experts dont participate in 1, or 5 questions at a time, but in 10+. At the time of this writing im busy with about 20 questions. If i had to wait 1 week with every question before the asker finally posts back: doesnt work, and i have to write a new idea of what it could be again, it could take a month before im finally finished with 1 question. Take in mind that the number of questions add up, and i (like most people) cant remember an exact question after a week. So that would mean i have to re-read everything before i can make another post.
Also, keep in mind that if it takes several weeks before an answer comes, people dont think they are taken serious. If someone asks something, i must put time into writing down, and sometimes searching the solution. I think its not more then fair that askers also show they appreciate it, by posting back fast.
For the reminder: Do you know how many people just leave their tread to die? i mean, not finisch it? the reminder is there so that you wont forget, or at least give an update your busy with it. New hardware can take a few weeks, so thats understandable, but a question about what is: thisandthat can and SHOULD be completed quickly

FalconHawk,
Appreciate what you are saying, but this was not a technical question that could be resolved immediately:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21403684/any-jewelry-specialist-can-help-me-on-this-ring.html
I have already commented in there before coming to this link (priorities thing - help first, moan afterwards).
If I, or any other participant in the thread had felt that enough time had elapsed then I (or they) would have posted a reminder.
Yes, if you're busy then keeping an idea fluent it would be a problem, but surely there you are talking about technical questions. The two questions I mentioned are both in the Misc TA. It used to be what the lounge was for, but since that was hijacked and had the max points reduced, any question of a somewhat serious nature tends to get asked in Misc as the askers want to reward more than the 50 pt max for a useful answer.
I don't mind waiting until the asker has been helped. Rushing the asker to close the question means sometimes that they have not had the best answer they could have as more research may be required (by all parties).
In short, I don't think that a robot reminder is in anyone's best interests in some TA's - perhaps if 14 days elapsed since the last post then a robot could add a comment, but info about this could be added at the point of asking the question, or just at the top of the TA when opening it?

Indeed, if you talk about the misc section, i think you got a strong point. About the robot: i think that if its for the misc section only, it could be increased to 14 days. Other side of the coin is, that if noone commented in 7 days, the question is most probally death from the pov ofnew posters. and dont forget that a user can post that the question is still valid.
Other thing: This is the applications selection. If you really want to make the point clear to the site management, you should post it into the support selection. the suggestion one i think is best. Heres the link to it:

Didn't even notice that, surfed on in here from a link in a misc question and my comments were related just to that.
turn123 has opened a question (with pointers to) purely to do with running the robot in misc and I expect that my comment would have been more relevant there.

Not opening a question when I started running the ping in Misc was a mistake on my part and I apologize. With hindsight I see that I should have and will try to remember for next time when I start pinging a new area.
Thank you FalconHawk for explaining my reasoning. I will add that the number I'm seeing tossed around is at 4 days if the asker hasn't responded they probably won't be back :-(. I personally don't like disappearing askers on questions that I participate in and my feeling is that most experts in Apps Productivity Apps etc... don't like it either.
I'm going to post some of my thoughts in the Misc thread after a while but am trying to get some more of the Misc experts and askers to post their thoughts before I do.
Please feel free to post any ideas for the script's text in the Misc thread as any changes there will probably end up coming back to all the areas covered by this thread.

I completely agree with you. If you ask, you should also have the patience to listen ;). Anyhow, your doing a great job from what iv seen, so keep up the good work :).
To wbaker57:
Cryptic answers? False leads? Really, if these where here in that abundnace, i wouldv quit after a few days. And since im still here, happily posting, i dont think there are that much "False Leads". The point is, that if you ask a question, there are several answers possible, and also several answers correct. Im mainly in the security section, and there its rare to have to post less then 3 post, because you simply cant look into someone elses PC, so various things may be ablaze there.
Second: Cryptic answers. Answers are never cryptic. I never met someone who is witing real idiocy in techno-terms. What you call cryptic, are simply technic terms. Understand how hard it is to answer sometimes. Some problems need those techo terms because thats what caused the problem. And what if you are gonna post 1 page, where you explain something moderatly simple to an expert, who just wanted details? Moral: If you DONT get it, just ask what you dont understand. people will be more then happy to repost it, written in more clear language.

chasing up 2-5 day old questions seems a little over zelus. Is there any reason why you picked this time period?
That and the text 'since this question starting to get a little old' is misleading, IMO.
That said I do appreciate mods/etc... trying to keep the questions moving.
