"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

check display properties, appearance tab, advanced button, check for symbols or wingdings or such as the choosen font for the various items, this may be difficult if you can't read the text, may be helpful to borrow a win2k notebook so you can go through the same steps at the same time and read the options on the notebook

Right click on your desktop. Click on the last menu item (Properties).

In the new window, click on the third tab (Appearance).

The top drop down box is "Scheme". Try changing this.
